Wrangaton is an absolute joy. Played the course on a 2fore1 while on holiday and loved every minute of it.

If one word could sum the course up, it’s “novelty”. I don’t mean that in the way rubbish toys inside cheap Christmas crackers are a novelty, but in the way that makes this a unique and memorable experience.

From having two courses in one – see other reviews – to the electrified fences that guard the greens, from the livestock wandering around – and across - the course to the fantastic views across south Devon, Wrangaton ticks all the right boxes. It won’t necessarily be the most testing round you’ll ever have, and the Parkland nine is comparatively unremarkable, but it nevertheless represents good value for money and is well looked after.

Admittedly beating my handicap and playing on a calm, sunny day improved the enjoyment factor, and perhaps if this was my local course the novelty might eventually wear off, but it would be nice to find out!

I moved to Devon six months ago and have played several courses. None match Wrangaton for originality and challenge. The first nine holes are played on Dartmoor with all its flora and fauna coming into play. Streams, heather, sheep, bogs and rocks all come into play. * of the first 9 are par fours with a solitary uphill par 3, but the variety of hazards means that you have to think through every shot. Animal lovers will be pleased to know that the Wrangaton sheep were nimble enough to avoid even my most unpredictable shots. Moorland greens are guarded by (low voltage) electrical fences, with access gained by golfers via a small gate!!! I have never seen this before.

The 10th tee demands a tee shot from moorland to parkland negotiating a granite wall on the way. The back 9 is like another world, tree lined fairways leading to sloping greens that demand accuracy. My favourites are the par 5 11th and par 3 12th. You really get two games in one at Wrangaton. The staff are superb - even allowing my pregnant partner and I to complete the back nine the following day after the front 9 and tired us out!!! Play Wrangaton, you will not be disappointed.

A taxing course to master, with the front nine being moorland, fairways marked with white stones. You need to be accurate or the stones can send you anywhere. The back nine is parkland and second-to-none. Some of the big competition courses could not compete with these 9 holes when at peak condition in the summer. All the greens on both front and back 9 are superb and very rarely are temporary greens used, even in winter. You will want to come back again and again to master this course.
