Wyboston Lakes Golf Course Player Reports
Rob Seels (England) 14/05/07
As there hasn't been a review of this course for a couple of years I thought I would update it since playing last weekend.
On all but two holes water is a factor. A combination of the 5 internal lakes, watery ditches and the majestic river Ouse make their presence felt at some point.
Accuracy is paramount. An example of this is the third. A 110 yd par 3. But with a pond in front of the green to carry and a huge lake at the back. Anywhere but the green means it's going to be tough to reach par.
All around the course there are water hazards to carry. 6 holes in total. And for the bigger hitters you can also try to carry the water on the 1st (Easy Tiger) and the 12th.
Well kept fairways and perfect putting surfaces are complimented by tricky rough. Hit it long. Hit it short, but wander off the short stuff at your peril.
To back up the course there is an excellent shop, with friendly and helpful staff and excellent gear. A good driving range. And the 19th serves excellent food and drink in picturesque settings.
Strong Japanese lager and a sunny chair on the patio overlooking the lakes. Perfect!

Having played Wyboston Lakes a couple of times since moving to the area, I recently decided to join the club.
The course is excellent condition - both fairways and greens are top notch - especially bearing in mind that it is quite a busy place. On occasion some of the greens can be a little soft - but they're still flat and it only really adds to the challenge.
As you would expect from the name, the bulk of the holes involve water in one way or another - sometimes the lakes themselves, sometimes the River Ouse. Therefore, while the course rewards straight hitting, potential disaster is never that far away!!
The water on a couple of the holes seems specifically designed to challenge the longer hitters - specifically the 1st and 12th, on which a deep breath and a brave line can pay real dividends.
The course can be deceptively difficult too. The longest par 3 is only 157 yards, but 4 out of the 5 involve avoiding the water!!
Although the A1 is quite close by, and the course isn't overly wooded - it always seems very quiet.
Aside from the course itself, the clubhouse is large and modern - definitely recommended.

what can i say ,this has got to be one of the best courses i have played in a long time, quite a challenging course but whenever i have played it ( winter/summer ) it has always been in pristine condition
if you live in a 50 mile radius you must play this course , very easy to get to aswell , only 200metres off the A1
excellent

This is an great course where accuracy is the key. I found that the layout
of this course severely handicaps a player who has a tendency to slice the
ball. There are a lot of water hazards with views over the River Ouse
creating some very scenic areas. The golf course is very well laid out and
it often feels that you are the only golfers on the course. The
bar/restaurant area has been recently refurbished and provides a fitting end
to 18 holes.

At present the course is in the finest condition it has been in for years!, The greens are quick and true and the rough is testing to recover from. A recently renovated club house and decking outside has made your visit to the 19th hole that bit more enjoyable!

Played this course with our society (28 strong) in July. From the moment we arrived to our departure the attention and commitment from the staff was second to none. Any top class course in Home Counties could learn from this club how to welcome and look after visitors. The course manager deserves particular praise for his attention to detail; the whole package was excellent value and the meal from the carvery could not have been better. As to the course it is an ideal venue for mid handicap players, not over long, but care is needed to produce a decent score. The greens were in excellent condition considering the play they must get. Whilst one is aware of the lakes they don’t really threaten to wreck a good card. Go out and enjoy this course whilst you can still get a booking, it can only get more popular.
