Wow, can't believe the last review. I've played Castle Combe a couple of times a year for the last 3 years and I;ve never found it any less than excellent in every way.
As result I've brought a society her for the last 2 years and we've been treated royally,
The course is superb and testing with several risk reward opportunities and some stunning par 3s in an exceptional setting.
Yes it can be pricey but there are many ways to play here at a discount, 2 for 1s, county card etc.
Before you start to worry, I have no stake in C.C I just think its a contender for best inland course in the region.

Played here midweek July 07 (£20 using a county card . Standard weekday green fees are a bizarre £85).
I thought that this course was vastly overated. After a 200 mile round trip i came away disappointed as it hadn't lived up to my expectations.
With the exception of some of the par 3's i thought most of the other holes were mediocre.Fairly bland parkland holes on the level high part of the course where you have to hit through narrow tree funnels or 2 oaks either side of the fairway & some slightly silly steep holes across the valley (e.g. 12 & 13).
I'm a big fan of the designer Peter Alliss's work but i wouldn't attach too much blame & would say he did the best he could with the available terrain.
The second problem was the hilly nature of the course .There are several long & steep inclines & declines the like of which i haven't seen before on a course .This course can realistically only be played by using a buggy. However as i was in a 3 ball & a buggy was £37.50 this wasn't a practical or financial option so walking meant that after a while the slopes became unenjoyable.
Overall the course was well presented & in good condition (although i quite often had mud on my ball on the fairway despite the fact that it has been fairly dry for the last 2 weeks & the ball sometimes stopped short of the green instead of running on as i would have expected.I would guess that in the winter it could get boggy here).
It's also in a pleasant & tranquil setting(although there were no views to speak of apart from trees).
Staff were welcoming & efficient but my overall feeling was of playing the back 9 & not really looking forward to the rest of the holes & for this & the above reasons i wouldn't play here again.

i am sure this is a great course when played on normal tees and untouched greens(not hollow tined). As we just played it on March 26th with the weather being fab,a few of us were a little disapointed having traveled 200 mile round trip to find the course shortened considerably(playing off white tees also)and very difficult greens to play into and to put on!.To sum it up this is good course played at the right time.

Having stayed the night before in the Manor House Hotel, I took my complimentary buggy up the hill to the course. Being on my own I was invited to play with a group of members. Fantastic company, fantastic golf and my apologies for taking their cash (24 pts on the back 9). If you do not have the money to play this course, then borrow it! You won't regret it.

Played in September 2004. Fantastically laid out course, making great use of the natural contours to create some stunning holes, and where the ground lies flatter, some interesting design to make life tricky. Would suggest that some of the bunkers are made huge just for the sake of it, where more thought-out design/placement could have made the hole just as difficult and probably more fitting with the style of the surrounding coutryside. But, hey - I'm not a course designer, so who am I to talk!!!
Wonderful facilities that cover everything you could want before and after your round. Thoroughly good day out.

I had the pleasure of playing this course during the recent hot spell. The course was is very good condition considering there had been no rain for over 4 weeks. Most courses I had been to to recently were very brown, but was very lush, the watering system must have been working overtime. As suggested by other players comments there are a great number of holes that are well remembered. I liked the third, the par 5, the 8th is a short par4 310 yards downhill, which is very driveable, this as well as the 11th, which was a short par 3, but very scenic. The 17th is a great hole, but the first time you play it, it is very much hit and hope it lands on the green. I will make every effort to return.
