Sunbury Golf Club Player Reports
J Leslie (England) 11/04/08
Although I am not a good player my report is just to say that the course condition has improved due to a lot of good work put in by the groundkeeping staff over the last year. Lots of clearing up and mowing work done. More drainage work done as well. The fairways are in good condition and the greens improved too, rolling quite smoothly at last!(only grumble with the greens is some players don't repair pitchmarks).
Fairways are quite narrow forcing nice accurate driving.
Friendly staff on the golf side and also in the bar area.
Bar/dining area very reasonable. There is a lounge type area at the back with couches in front of TV. Plus a mix of high stool type chairs and tables and normal height chairs and tables. I haven't eaten there so can't comment on the food. There is an upstairs which is available to hire for parties.
Changing room could do with some improvement in the air conditioning.

A nice little course .Have played here twice this year with societies.
First time it was very wet.Second very cold. The bunkers could have been better, but maybe i should have stayed out of them. The greens are fine. This is a good course for massaging your handicap/game.
Off course however is a different matter. The food (we had the chefs special)was appalling, and several of our party would not eat any of it. Foolishly we gave them a second chance on our next visit. Oh dear big mistake.
However, putting the food aside, i would say give this golf course a chance, and just take a sandwich.

Played the 18 hole course today, and must say I really enjoy it. Greens/fairways/tees where in great condition. Most of the green side bunkers have nice fresh sand in them (better than the mud in previous years) Paths seem to of have a revamp too. I think the greenkeepers are paying much more attention to detail (than previous years). Also reading previous posts about adding rough on the 16th hole, they have. I would like alittle more deep rough in places on the course.(maybe leave the upper parts of the mounds very long?)
Staff are very friendly.
P.s Great car wash!

Whilst it is true that Sunbury is open and somewhat forgiving, the course is maturing very well and is developing great character. Specifically the greens have become great 'rollers' and the undulations of the newer greens and fairways are making this a sterner than five or six years ago.
Improvements could be made, for example allowing some rough to grow up in front of the 16th green would make it a 'proper' par 4 for no additional cost to the club and improve the challenge.
The people at Sunbury Golf Club are extremely friendly and the club is vibrant, competitive and doesn't take itself too seriously. There are some boorish elements, however - one chap - a sort of 'happy shopper' David Beckham of indeterminate vintage turned out to be the President. Once you cut through these veneers, however, you can appreciate a bunch of people who enjoy their golf and enjoy 'the craic'.
If you go back you will be very impressed at the improvements!!!

Just been down to the revamped driving range, it automatically puts the balls on tees, don't even have to bend down lol! Also the course is looking very tidy and in good condition.
Very helpful and friendly staff.

This course is in great shape, the greens, fairways and tees are in superb condition! I have played loads of pay and play courses and not many come close to the condition of this course. This course is definately on the way up! It's hard to recongnise the course from what I saw a few years back. Will consider becoming a member even though I live 15+ miles away.
