Played here February 08 (£20 using a 2 FORE 1 ).
One of the most unenjoyable courses that i've ever played. It's very bland ,unimaginative & uninspiring.Unfortunately, the terrain here means that it was always going to be a struggle to put down a decent course.
We played The Woods & Lakes. There are only three par 3's on these loops. The Woods mainly consists of parallel holes running up & down but involves lots of going up & down slopes. The lakes is similar but involves less climbing.
I knew it wasn't going to be any good after about 3 holes & by the turn it was only the fact that i'd forked out £20 that made me carry on.Looking back, there wasn't one time when i got on a tee & thought 'this is a good hole'.
It generally has an open & exposed feel to it & some holes don't feel as if they have their own identity with adjoining fairways running close by.I thought the layout (lots of walking between greens & tees) & design (bunker positioning not particularly well thought out & predictable.Generally not much until you hit the green then ,invariably, a bunker across the front of the green) was poor.Bland hole follows bland hole.
Further downsides were scruffy tees , lack of a defined fairway edge , there were no hole sign /yardages on any of the tees & a bit expensive in the bar.
The standard green fee £40 is a joke for a course like this & i felt aggrieved that i'd had to fork out £20 for it.
Don't waste your money

The course has 3 loops of 9, the Parks, the Lakes and the Woods. If you are only playing 18 then the Lakes and Woods are by far the more interesting; the Parks is rather bland and would more suite beginners. Having said that the Woods doesn't have that much wood and the Lakes doesn't have that much water. A well maintained and laid out course providing a pleasant round of golf. Excellent clubhouse and catering facilities. Reasonable value on the various discount offers the club makes. A club that goes out of its way to make visitors welcome.

A group of 4 of us recently played all 27 holes in Late March 2006. We took advantage of the winter deal of 18 holes for £ 35. We were also took advantage of the option to add the last 9 for an extra £ 5.00.
All 3 courses were immaculate and very challenging. There is a nice mix of wide open fairways, tight greens, well placed bunkers and designed lakes that would test even the most proficient golfer. We played on a windy day, and this made the Lakes course particularly tricky.
As you would expect from a golf club of this size, the service and facilities are as good as it gets. Smart dress and golf shoes are a must.

Played on a crisp winter morning, course in excellent condition. Got a winter deal for £35 for 27 holes and lunch, great value. As for the course, Woods by far the better 9, Lakes has interesting holes. The Parks is a little to open and featureless. When the course has matured, i'm sure it will be a good test.

Sandford Springs is a course that I have played many times. There are 3 loops; Lakes, Woods & Parks. My own preference is that the Lakes & Woods have the more entertaining holes and therefore seem better value for the guest green fees that are more than most courses in the Newbury / Basingstoke area. The 2nd on the Woods is an interesting downhill dogleg whilst the approach to the raised green 7th has some steep faced bunkers to negotiate. The 2nd on the Lakes is a challenging par-5 with plenty of water for the 2nd & 3rd shots, and depending on pin placement the 9th green can be fast and difficult to read. The Parks has an entertaining downhill par-3 2nd with a tiered green and depending on forward tees, wind and luck the short par-4 9th green can be driven by big-hitters.

Played Lakes & Park 18/2/03. Unfortunately, the greens were no longer like carpets - they looked like they had been in play throughout the winter and were in a shocking state. A shame really because the rest of the course, particularly the fairways, were in excellent condition for the time of the year. Quite a forgiving course which should be good value with 2-fore-1 vouchers when the greens have recovered. The full midweek green fee of £30 seems a bit steep to me for this course but the clubhouse was excellent and the staff very friendly.
