Marriott Meon Valley Hotel and Country Club Resort Player Reports
Richard McMurdo (England) 15/02/08
The Meon Valley Golf & Country Club (Marriot Hotel) has the 18-hole championship Meon course and the 9-hole Valley course. Like all Marriot courses both are well maintained with conditioned fairways, quality greens and all-year bunkers.
The Meon course opens with a fairly simple par-5 where the drive and the approach over the stream to uphill green are the challenging shots. The par 4 2nd is a tricky hole where the drive is narrow and tree lined. You can cut the corner on the par 4 3rd and the approach is likely to roll from front right to back left. After a simple short par 3 comes the difficult par 4 5th with a long approach over a hidden dip with a stream. The par 4 6th dog-legs right to left and the par 3 7th is a cute hole over water. The par 5 8th is long and narrow and normally the longest drive hole in competitions. The par 4 9th is a good front 9 hole to finish on and demands correct clubbing for your 2nd shot. The back 9 opens with a long par 5 where you can open your shoulders with the driver. This is followed by the beautiful par 4 11th with a 90 degree dog-leg and an uphill 2nd shot. Following a short downhill par 3 over water you play the par 4 13th with an uphill blind tee shot. The par 3 14th is long at 230+ yards off the back tees and this if followed by a thought provoking short par 4 15th with slight dog-leg. It is possible to reach the green but bunkers front left & right will probably gulp up any attempt. The par 4 16th is c.460 yards and dog-legs left to right. A very good 2nd shot is the key here. The par 4 17th is a pretty hole with a down-hill, small green landing area over a pond. The par 4 18th is drivable with the wind behind but should be played with brains & not brawn due to the OOB on the left. All in all, a good challenge of golf and worthy of carrying the Marriot brand, although on some days the fairway grass can be left a day too long before cutting.
The Valley course is not your normal easy 9-hole as it contains approach shots over water, tight tree lined fairways, three different par 3’s, dog-leg & uphill par 4’s, a long par 5 with a do or dare corner to cut and concludes with a good uphill hole. Playing this loop twice is just as challenging as playing the Meon course, or makes an interesting 9 if playing with the Championship over a 27-hole day.

First impressions weren't the best when I came to practice on the range a week before and saw a SIX BALL teeing off! Must have been a one off because the pro-shop were friendly and well organised and did everything we asked of them for our golf society.
The course looks fairly innocent on paper but is actuallu quite hilly. The greens were good, I just wish they'd cut the fairways a bit shorter to give the accurate players the full benefit of a straight tee shot. There wasn't a great deal of difference between this and the semi-rough. In a way this helps, because it's a busy course with lots of corporate golf and, as we saw, the odd six ball. Immacualtely sculpted fairways wouldn't survive long and would be full of divots.
The facilities are also excellent here and there is generally a nice, friendly, relaxed atmosphere with a choice of places to eat/drink after your golf. Not one for the purists but a nice venue all the same.

Just played the course on a fine Friday afternoon with a society from work.
The course is an excelent challenge for any golfer, for me a high handicapper it was great fun because most of the holes gave me room and the confidence to 'have a go'- it didn't always work out. The holes are all quite different some with water in front of the green, some long flowing fairways, intricate dog-legs a great mixture.
The off course facilities are faultless as you would expect from a hotel and country club set up very impressive.
The only downsides that I found was that some of the fairways were pretty chopped up at pitching distance to the green ( divots not replaced) and the number of pitch marks not repaired on the greens. This in my mind not the fault of the green keepers but shows that even on what is an expensive course the actions of many golfers leaves a lot to be desired

Our society visited Meon Valley on a Special Winter deal in Jan 2005, good value at £20 including Steak & Kidney afterwards. The course was in goodish condition for the time of year with just one temp in play although some of the other green were a bit "squishy and bumpy". The course has matured nicely over the years and most holes follow a good avenue of large trees, whilst water comes into play on a few holes. At this price, certainly worth a visit, but at high summer prices, could be slightly overpriced. If you do visit though, take your own food - an average Bacon and Egg Roll and cup of coffee a whopping £6.40. !!! - and looking at wine menu, cheapest was £17 for a Merlot that Tescos would sell at £3.......Basically, good course, nice welcome, but forget eating or drinking there!

Played in April 04, first sunny day of the year and the course was in excellent condition. Very challenging and a great day out, will be back again soon!

What a lovely course, the sorroundings are beautiful and the members were very friendly. Each hole was a pleasure to play and very challenging. The tree's are mature and the green's and fairway's are immaculate. The only downside was the prices at the bar, £2 for a small cup of coffee!!! What a day out though.
