Bird Hills (UK) Ltd. Player Reports

David McCay (England) 20/07/07

I have been playing golf now for about 9 months and i have found Bird Hills to be one of the best courses i have played in the berkshire area for beginners. It has wide fairways, good tee placement and the greens are generally in a very good condition.

This is a very good course for building confidence and generally improving the game of a high handicapper as well as providing a good proving ground for those with lower handicaps.

I do agree with some of the previous comments around the wind as this is a very open course and always seems to have some form of wind blowing but i think this is acceptable and part of the courses challenge.

I have been playing golf for just over a year now, and this course has been a regular feature on my tour of local courses.

It is a nice course, certainly challenging for the beginner. Long rough is a bit of a problem, causing a few lost balls, but thats all in the challenge of the course! The only problem I tend to have is that it is windy, even on one of the hottest days of the summer, the wind somehow blew to a gale!! Cant blame the course for that, but bear it in mind, and watch that wind report on the weather!

In the early 90's Birds Hill had the reputation of being a bit ordinary. Now, with much effort having been put in, it is more challenging. The rough is great - a real challenge - so keep it straight !

Great club house, BUT pro shop, which once was great is now pretty ordinary.

Allround worth a visit and good value.

played here 5th August and was very impressed with everything.

Breakfast was very good, clubhouse excellent and the course was in excellent condition, greens were lovely, fairways in good condition and for gbp 18.00 per round (midweek) represents excellent value for the south east.

Played with a 2 handicapper and a 20 handicapper and we all were thoroughly impressed.

The last comment is very true, having played 18 holes (1/8/01), I find the course very good, greens faily quick, fairways kept well, though the short rough is a pain, not that short, the deep stuff is a nightmare, once in there you can say bye bye to any ball.

The fairways were hard, due to the weather, which helped me drive the 17th green (319yds).

The 2 other players I played with also shouted their praise about the course, 2 of us hadnt played the course for over 6 years, and have been astounded by the quality of the course.

Try a round, you will find you have a good day.

I read the reports below and thought 'are they talking about the same Bird HIlls?'. Certainly not the course I play on regularly.

The course had a bad reputaion as Hackers Hill( old name Hawthorn Hill G.C.). Times have changed in a big way. A lot of money has been invested in the course by its new owners and the green keepers are simply doing an excellent job. The course has held up very well over the very wet winter and is now in superb condition. The greens are the best around and the fairways in good condition. Installation of a new pond by the 6th and moat around the 13th and many new bunkers have added some considerable spice to the course. Further improvements are planned including moving the 15th tee to the far side of a lake, gorse bushesmore water hazards, moving tees to more challenging positions and more bunkers.

The Pro shop has just been refurbished and is stocked with top of the range stuff. Good food and a friendly staff coimplement the course.

The night golf evenings are a scream.

The range has all new balls as well.

So as you see very good course and soon to be an excellent one.

No I don't work there either!

PS. check out the stunning views of the Thames Valley on the 12th and 16th.

Having played my first round at Bird Hills as part of our Golf society, I have to say I was very impressed by the course. The fairways and greens were in excellent condition although I agree with previous comments that later in the summer the fairways could be very tricky to play off. The bar facilities were also excellent, giving a most enjoyable afternoon of golf.

Bird Hills is a course which offers an easier layout for the high handicapper, as the fairways are mainly flat, wide and straight. The greens are generally in good condition, however the fairways are very poor, in the summer months some are like playing off concrete, and are in desperate need of attention.

The wind can also be a problem as the location is windswept even on a calm summers day. I echo previous sentiments in that all round it is a poor course and is fair to middling in terms of value for money.

This is one of the worst golf courses in the Reading/Maidenhead area. This is due to the clay bed the course is built on not allowing good grass growth. It is also at the moment a very open/windy course although a large number of new trees have been planted, which will be nice in Twenty years time.\r\nThe pro-shop is reasonable and the restaurant/bar facilities are lovely.\r\nNice driving range with floodlights and targets, unfortunately the balls are of bad quality.
