Trevose Golf and Country Club Player Reports

Day 4 of Cornwall 2008 and that meant tackling Trevose's Championship Course.

So what's it like?

In one word: overrated.

I mean just ask yourself: how many truly memorable holes are there here? No, not half-decent holes but I mean *truly* memorable ones? You know - the kind of holes that have you standing on the tee thinking "God I'm lucky to play this game" or that you drool over in the bar afterwards like some demented canine eyeing up a juicy fillet steak.

OK there's the par 5 4th with the scenic 2nd/3rd shot towards the crashing ocean waves. How many others? Er... Yes, quite.

And all this from a former Top 100 course (although the rankings people seem to have since woken up).

However, this criticism is not to deny the test. When we played, the Navy were having their week-long championship here (that's a separate argument I'd like to have about whether taxpayers money should be funding their week-long golf jolly) and the proper rough had been lengthened to knee-height so that anything beyond 10 yards either side of the fairway was an almost guaranteed lost ball – that sure concentrates the mind quickly enough, even if it does nothing for the pace of play, which was atrociously slow.

Anyway, the enforced difficulty of the rough does give the course an element of 'championship' feel and the Great British Summer weighed in with its part: driving rain, hail and sun, all in the space of the opening hole. However, Jeeves in particular overcame both to respond with a good score on the day.

Overall, though, too much of this course is bland. How on earth can this ever be considered superior to Perranporth by any criterion other than length? Answers on a postcard please...

As we checked out the local Chinese (takeaway), it was a sobering thought to reflect that there was already only day of Cornwall 2008 left – and that meant destination St Enodoc.

6.75/10

If you have not been to Trevose for 2 years or more you need to get back and enjoy the fantastic changes/investment that has been made to seriously upgrade this course. I have played golf at Trevose for over 20 years and I can't get over the improvement in recent years - hence this review. The fairways have great definition, pot bunkers everywhere and generally it is in superb condition. This is now a top flight golf course.

This is what golf should be like a stern test on a well cared for course with great views.

when the wind blows the first 6 holes are tough so be aware!!!

Club house was friendly so there is no excuse for you not to go.

Played Trevose over three days at end of September, as destination for our group golf weekend. Course was in great condition with superb views, especially at 4th green which is nearest the sea. The wind really sets the challenge, which forces you to think, and waterproofs in the autumn are highly recommended, even if you start your round in brilliant sunshine.

Very hospitable clubhouse, especially if you remember that a shirt with a collar is required in the evening, although jeans, shorts & trainers did not appear to be a barrier to entry.

Overall great as a golf destination, with decent mix of accommodation on site.

Played here as part of a golf trip (£20 each using 2 FORE 1 ).Overall impression of this course was not as good as we were expecting.Anticipation was high after reading about this course as we made our way to the course. However after pulling into the car park this seemed to diminish slightly as we looked at the course layed out down below us(& the caravan park across to the right in the distance). The sense of magic & mystery didn't seem to be quite there & expectation was replaced by hope.

After initially trying to charge us full green fees instead of the 2FORE 1 s that we had booked we started off on the white tees (admittedly we should have asked)and within a nano-second a member appeared out of nowhere to ask us what we were doing (hardly crime of the century). We then moved to the yellows while he stood there & watched all 4 of us tee off.

There's a nice par 3 third hole & the 4th is the best hole on the course .A great par 5 that sweeps round to the left to a green by the sea. But then that's more or less it as the course comes back inland for the rest of the round. The front 9 is easily the better as the back 9 is unremarkable with few memorable holes.Course condition was reasonably good & £20 is good value but St. Enodoc & Perrenporth are the real deal.

I'm an 18 handicap and played at c. 4:45pm on an August weekday (25 pounds 'twilight rate').

Overall I think this is a strong course, with the front nine more memorable than the back nine.

The hole highlights are both rather early: holes 1 (par 4 that plays longer than its 440 yards, although the wind was a factor) and 3 (nice par 3).

The greens are fantastic - very very quick. The rough, meanwhile, is punishing.

I was disappointed that despite being very much a links course, few holes are immediately next to the sea - most are practically inland, although the sea is visible from most holes.

The wind was not strong when I played, but it did make a real difference - one par 5 was easily reachable in two shots, whereas I had trouble making a par 4 in three shots!

I don't think the course is worth the usual green fee of 50 quid - do what I did, and wait until it's the twilight rate.

I shot a 95, which was c. five over my handicap. I blame the greens (quick) and wind!
