I am a low handicapper from the US and visit the area each year and always come back to this course. The clubhouse is a converted stone farmhouse with a pleasant balcony overlooking the 9th green and has a very friendly atmosphere, its a good place just to come for a drink or for the good food. The course is set is gently rolling countryside just north of Derby. There is something about Horsely Lodge that makes it special, its not grand, and its not a championship course, but it has a very distinct atmosphere and charm that makes it stand out from the rest.

The course is 6,400 yards from the back tees and is a relatively modern design with water coming into play on several holes. I really enjoy playing this course, and although there are some easy holes I would not say that any are weak ones in terms of design. The back 9 is especially well laid out with very strong 17th and 18th finishing holes.

Unlike so many UK courses there is a driving range and a short game practice area and if I lived in the area all these things would encourage me to join. Its the sort of course that makes for a pleasant home course that you could play each week and enjoy your round without getting bored or beaten over the head by an overly severe course design. And you would always look forward to a pint in the clubhouse at the end of a round watching over the part three 9th from the balcony. Give it a try.

I have not played here for a couple of years and it has improved. The trees are getting bigger so it know longer looks wide open. The condition of the course was good with the greens in very shape.

There are a few holes that are poor, 1st, 13th and 15th but there are some very good holes 17th and 18th, both of these are 400+ par fours with the 17th having a second shot over water and the 18th going up hill to the club house. I don't like the drive way at the back of the 1st and 10th tees. Overall worth the £25.

Played late Oct. £25 for a 12.30 tee off - good value. Course was a little damp, and as always I seemed to play on a day that the greens were being spiked.

Back nine more interesting than front, with plenty of ornamental water features coming into play.

Nice course, friendly and relaxed.

Visited this course in may 2003 on a scorching hot day. course is fabulous and well worth £35 (2-1 voucher). Greens were excellent and certainly demanded my best attention to avoid 3 putting. Not the longest of courses but some very good holes requiring careful course management. would go back without hesitation.

9/10

I am a handicap golfer of 22, and i can honestly say having played a lot of different courses over the past 3 years, this has to be the best. The course is in A1 condition and all the greens are like billiard tables. I understand they have won awards for their greens and i can say its well deserved. Every hole has something different, whether it be driving over a wall, over water or over a hill. The rough isnt too punishing either.

We payed £30 for a day ticket using the 2 for 1 vouchers and it was worth every penny

Even when we had a thunderstorm and a very heavy downpour in the afternoon, the course dried up extremely quickly, whereas the greens remained perfect because of the sand base.

One thing to warn you about, on the 11th tee, DO NOT take anything more than a 5 iron if youre anything like an above average distance hitter. You drive over a hill, but on the other side the hill is so steep the ball will run down into the water hazard(dont say you weren't warned)

All in all an excellent course, nice people, very nice food, the best £30 you will spend on a days golf.............TRY IT...YOU WONT BE SORRY..LET ME KNOW HOW YOU FAIR........
