Wellshurst Golf and Country Club Player Reports

Wellshurst is maturing nicely since its opening in the mid nineties and £24 for a weekend visitor represents excellent value. There are still plenty of staked trees in places but the fairways and greens are as good as you find at far more pricey venues.

Except for the 11th, the course is not particularly demanding or long. However, several risk/reward holes offer plenty to think about, especially if the wind is blowing. My only criticism of the course is that the last two holes – a 240-yard Par 4 and short, uphill Par 3 - are a disappointingly bland end to an otherwise highly enjoyable course. That said, the layout is rather irregular in places and first-time visitors should pay careful attention to the signs throughout the course to avoid playing the wrong hole.

The off-course facilities are adequate rather than spectacular although the staff in the (recently refurbished) pro shop were very friendly and helpful. The members we encountered were equally welcoming, even going out of their way to return a pitching wedge carelessly left behind by my brother!

A highly enjoyable venue, definitely worth a visit.

Quite a nice course, in good condition especially the greens. Considering how much rain there was prior to playing, the fairway and greens drainage must be very good.

Some of the holes are quite similar and 17 and 18 are a weak finish. It looks like they ran out of room.

The 11th, 437 yd, par 4, uphill and into the strong wind was very tough as was the 9th, 203 yd, par 3.

Not the hardest course you'll ever play, but worth a visit

Very good layout, fun to play. Quite cheap. I played it after the Oct 00 storms and the mud in places sucked our golf shoes off, so I'm looking forward to playing it in drier climes. They did give us a much discounted greenfee for being mad enough to go out. It's got a high percentage of decent holes, which is what I look for in a course. It ranks up there with Seaford Head and Horam as my favourite local tests, nothing much to choose between the three- Seaford Head my favourite because you can play 18 there for a tenner.

I have just played my first round at Wellshurst for 5 years and the transformation over that time has been astounding. Now just 10 years old, the course has matured into what can only be described as the best value for money 18 holes in Sussex. The greens are now up to standard, and with extra drainage added all over the course, the faiways are superb. There are a number of challenging holes, but the par 5 16th is a joy with it's dogleg and approach shot that must clear a lake to get onto the green. The only disappointment is the par 3 18th, which at 140 odd yards didn't give me much of a thrill after the previous 17 excellent holes.

Get down there now - you'll be surprised at what's on offer.
