Dale Hill Hotel and Golf Club Player Reports
John Day (England) 06/05/08
Played both courses on a Sunday - Monday deal on 27/4/08
Weather was pleasant
I'm an 18 H'capper and not a big hitter (to help where I'm coming from, plus aesthetics are important to me)
Played the Woosy course first. On arrival I thought oh no it's a converted farmers field and it is a bit open but it is beautifully laid out and well designed. It was a good test of golf with a variation of holes without being bang bang chip. Good views on some holes. I throughly enjoyed it. Unable to give a true opinion of the greens as they had been hollow tyned and filled.
Played the old course the following day and perhaps having been spoilt the day before I found this course to be very ordinary, not unpleasant but very similar to the North London suburban courses I play regularly.
Would I recommend it, yes but I think there are better packages.
Word of warning re the hotel, the food is neuvelle cuisine very nice but not a lot of it! (Having a full belly is also important to me)

Having returned a few weeks ago just had to write and say what a fantastic place this is to play and stay
Two brilliant golf courses and fantastic hotel with first class staff, our group of 30 or so found no fault....not easy.
Loved both courses, the older is shorter but a good warm up for the Woosnam....hopefully he will get more courses to work on as he got this one spot on
Thanks and we will be back

Great venue and a decent test of golf. Course benefits from the acres of space available. The fairways are generous, but miss them and you are in properly-punishing rough. Par threes (5 of them) are a joy to play. Greens are top drawer; slick but consistent.
Even if your game deserts you on this course, the views are wonderful and the buggies will provide some thrills (at least two paths wouldn't be out of place on a theme park ride!).

Played Dale Hill on 25 August after some horrendous rain the day before. The course was holding up really well, no flooded bunkers at all just a few wet places in amongst the tree lined holes as expected. The course isn't long and you could probably get away with 3 wood on all the Par 4's but I thought the Par 3s were very good. Most are only about 160 yards but well presented. Well designed course overall actually and always interesting but we got stuck behind a society from Belgium that took 5 1/2 hours to get round. Apart from this a good day out for the money.

Played the Woosnam course yesterday and would echo all the comments about its value and appearance. I played it about 5 years ago and it has improved very nicely. It was the first time that my playing partner had played it and he was also impressed. Fairways and greens in excellent condition, the course is a very fair test and, i think, is superior to Chart Hills.
I also agree that the Staff very helpful, and the refurbishment of teh hotel and conference facilities make it a first class venue.

Played the Old Course as a fourball and using 2 for 1 vouchers. Great value for money, with some enjoyable holes (7th, 13th and 16th in my opinion being the best). I am sure it won't be too long before I return.

Alistair Armstrong (England) 03/05/05
Played the woosnam course on 1/5/05. Using a 2 fore 1 voucher I don't think you will find a better value golf course in the area. I agree with a previous comment that the course is a little short playing off the yellow tees, but the variety of holes, the views (especially the 1st par 3 which from memory is the 4th) and the quality of the fairways and bunkers make up for this. The greens whilst quick were a little uneven, it looked like they had been recently spiked so may improve in a few weeks.
It does not feel as exclusive as its' sister course Chart Hills but is more forgiving to a higher handicapper and with the discounted green fee is very highly recommended.

we played the ian woosnam course today (07/02/05)and what a course. the staff where very helpfull and the course was in good condition considering the time of year. there was some very trickiy holes ie the 8th and 9th were you play over some loverly valleys. all in all a great days golf espiecialy when we got it two for one and buggie thrown in as well. well done dale hill cant wait to go back soon.
Dave Watson (England) 04/09/04
We played the ian woosnam course on 2.9.04 .I cannot speak highly enough of this course the welcome from the staff was the freindliest i have known ,
and the condition of the course was fantastic but found the greens extremely hard to read. My only small criticism would be that the fairways nedded cutting a bit shorter. When we played we got the 2 fore 1 deal which makes this course even better value as you get a buggie in the price of your round. Go and play you won't be disappointed.
Ian Dallas (UK) 28/05/03
Played the Woosnam and the Old Course over the 2003 May bank holiday weekend. The condition of the courses could not be faulted and both have some very interesting holes!
My only critisism would be that both courses are a little on the short side. If you are a single figure handicapper, try and play from the back tees. At 6,000 yards, the Woosnam doesn't have a par 4 over 400 yards from the yellow tees.
Richard King (England) 08/11/02
Played the Woosnam course on a dreadful day in September. With the weather aside, the course was in great condition and stood up to the wet very well. The course is a good test of golf with long rough on many of the holes and the opening long Par five sets you up nicely for a very enjoyable round of golf. In all I recommend this course to all standard of golfers, but you do need to hit the ball relatively straight of the Tee.

Old course;
Am I alone in thinking that it's odd to stand on the first tee and have a face full of 120 year old oaks ? Where are you supposed to aim for ? My mate, I played with, a club member, came up with the bizzare statement "aim at the trees, hope it fades away, if it doesn't, you've hit a good shot"
After that, you get lulled in to a false sense of security (apart from the 3rd green - hands up those who have putted off the green and 30yds back down the fairway) then she jumps up and bites you through 13/14/15/16 if you can get through there without losing a ball, you're home.
Not long, make your score early, survive "amen corner" and you'll have a low number on your card.

I have played the old course twice and both times were very enjoyable. Although the Pro-shop has been expanded come with plenty of balls. The front nine gradually get more difficult leading up to the back nine, The 1st and 2nd are relitively easy but the same cant be said for all holes. There are two short holes but that doesnt mean you will par them. Nice fairways for this time of year and the greens vairy in speed. It all adds up to make a great game.
Rob Wilson (UK) 19/09/01
Spent a weekend at the hotel recently and enjoyed 3 rounds Woosnam ,Old Course then Woosnam again.
The Woosnam is a fantastic course with some excellant holes the majoratity being in the valley after the par 3 5th.My advise to any high handicappers would be take a lot of balls as the rough is very hard.Buggies are compulsary on the Woosnam and are included in the green fees. The old course front nine settles you down after the test of the Woosnam but has a sting in it's tail on the back nine Buggies for this course are £20 extra but not needed as the course is not phyically demanding.Hotel was fine,Pro-shop did not have much to offer so advice would be to make sure you are prepared on arrival, although i believe the shop is being expanded soon. All in all had a great weekend and would highly recommend both courses.
Robin Hodges (UK) 02/08/00
The old course is a fine course. Some generous fairways means forgiveness on mis-hit tee shots. Many greens are protected by several bunkers and the course also has some water which makes you plan your attack. The course is not too demanding physically and offers you a good game of golf. With seven par 4 holes being under 360 yds, it offers scope for good scores, but this is not to suggest the course is easy - believe that and the course will get you next time! Highly recommended.

The "Woosie"-course is a good test for all golfers. Excellent conditions - greens very good. Also fine accomodation in the Hotel with a friendly welcome.
