Farthingstone Golf Club and Hotel Player Reports

Colin Jenkins (England) 13/11/07

My wife and I played the course last Monday and loved it. The greens were quick with subtle breaks and contours, the fairways fine. The bunkers on the course may need a tidy up but I only visited one, and the layout of the course magnificent. Some very beautiful parkland and mature trees, not too much water. We are members of and play regular golf at local courses which are maintained to a high standard, we have taken out a points membership at Farthingstone. We enjoyed a great days golf which is essentially what it is all about, and found the course sufficiently challenging to regard the one birdie as magic. The professional is a charming man with a well stocked shop of essentials and secondhand clubs, the food was fine

We played this course last week 21/05/07, five rounds Monday to Friday, a party of 20 golfers ranging in handicaps from 5 to 26. Reading some of the reports I was a little concerned as to what condition the course would be in.

We were all pleasantly surprised, the course in general was excellent, especially the greens. Lots of bumps and hollows and quick enough to make you think about even the shortest of putts.

The bunkers could do with a bit of work but there are not that many.

The hotel was fine if a little frayed at the edges. The food was really good and plentiful, all in all an excellent weeks golf and stay. I would recommend this course to anyone considering a short break in the area.

Played there last week and found the course to be reasonable but not in the best shape alough not as bad as the prebious comments. First few holes are a bit cramped in but there are some good holes and it is one of those course where you rarely get a flat lie so that's a challenge. Not much rough to speak of and the tee boxes, greens and flags weren't in the best shape. 6/10

Upon driving into the course you cant help but be impressed, But the course is anything but impressive. The tee boxes are overgrown and uneven and the greens are long and rutted in parts, The bunkers dont have any sand in hardly. I could go on and on as to why you shouldnt play here but I think you've probably read enough already. I was so angry after playing here that I wanted to ask for part if not all of my money back but the pro was nowhere to be seen. We like to play new courses every week and rely on reviews posted on this website and I have to say that this is the first time that the reviews have been misleading. Avoid at all costs.

recently played this course midweek which was nice and quiet and in a good setting. interesting course layout and one which is very challenging. my only criticism would be the condition especially of the greens which are sometimes bare in places and very bobbly

Back in 1996 four golfers visited Farthingstone for a weekend of golf, every year since they have returned. This year, 2002, there will be nine of us playing for the "Farthingstone Tankard".

At then end of each weekend, where we play 18 on friday, 36 on Saturday and 18 on Sunday we all ask ourselves "shall we try somewhere different next year?" and the response is always the same "No...lets come back here!".

The holes are challenging and the greens normally excellant. A relatively tight course in places, not too long, but you need to be on your short game to play well.

The 7th par 4 offers one of the best birdie opportunities whilst the 10th par 4 leaves you happy if you walk off with bogie.

The food has always been fantastic and the rooms although basic (but who spends long in them?) are comfortable enough - long as you don't share with the snorer of your party!

I would recommend this course to everyone from beginner to low handicaper.

The thirteenth is a cracker as you can hit a sweet ball to the green but it is bound to bounce of into the rough! Great, great course. I promise you.

Farthingstone is a truly beautiful golf course. Even if you are a poor golfer it makes a pleasant walk as it is situated in mature oak woodland with several water features. The fairways are in excellent condition and the greens play well but beware when there is heavy rain or flooding as the course does become waterlogged on some fairways and at times will be closed. The tenth is one of the most challenging of all as the bunkers are very cleverly placed to make your game all the more enjoyable and it crosses a wide, steep valley with excellent views of the surrounding countryside. The seventh is a beautiful hole and the fourteenth is very deceptive. If you want a fantastic day out at a high quality golf course then visit Farthingstone as it is great value for money, you would be foolish not to. Grub is excellent and there is a well stocked pro shop too. You want a challenging course that is scenic and attractive? Then you must go to Farthingstone.

Myself and three friends have just spent a great weekend at this excellent golf club. £80 for two rounds of golf, dinner bed and breakfast seemed to good to be true, it wasn't. Great course in good condition ( Winter tee's apart), nice hotel rooms and good food.

Want a fantastic course. Played 4 times last weekend in a society. Fairways are in excellent condition but for me the greens were the icing on the cake. Apart from one or two relatively simple greens they were extremely quick and a real challenge to read. Favourite holes: No. 6, the green is down in a valley surrounded by bunkers; No. 7, 3 good shots required to get on the green which is huge; the 9th, 190 yards off the tee to get over water; and a daunting 2nd shot to a severely elevated green on the 10th. Special note for the par 3 11th, there is an alternative tee down a path on the left which is much more of a challenge, although you have more green to play with.

Also, the people also friendly, the rooms quite basic and the food good, paticularly the bar snacks. All in all an excellent golf course, a real challenge for all handicappers. Highly recommended.

Played there again this week and must correct my earlier comment the greens were superb and far to undulating for me. With the greens as they are this course is really tops.

This is a real find good use of trees and water make it a real pleasure to play, some of the greens were a bit bobly and bare in places but this doesn't detract from an interesting course. Special note for the 8th, 11th and 18th which will test your score card to distraction. Go and play there especially as the accept 2-FORE!-1 vouchers so we played for under a tenner.
