Sand Martins Golf Club Player Reports

With the weather this june being great for golf i decided to take advantage by going just south of wokingham to meet an old friend to play at sand martins. The drive in snakes through the back 9 and there is every chance of a stray ball hitting you. The clubhouse is in the middle of the estate and provides a scenic back drop with the putting green, 1st tee, 9th and 18th greens all feeding into it. The course is two distinct loops one parkland the other links, the front 9 starts off really well the 1st being a solid dog-leg which allows those who have not warmed up to leave the driver in the bag. The 2nd, i thought was a great hole and by far the most imaginative par 4 i have played on all year. After playing the front two my hopes for the remaining layout were high only to be let down badly by holes holes 3 through to 8. which were plan, straight too close to each other and ultimately the classic example of what is wrong with the modern parkland layout. the 9th though, was a clever little hole and raised my spirits. we stopped for an ice cream and was served by one of the many charming eastern european staff that worked here ( i can't imagine many daily mail readers being members) and headed off to play the back 9 links loop. Oh dear, while the 10th if you squinted your eyes may just about pass as a typical links hole the rest are as plain as the front 9, although they have replaced the trees separating the holes from the front nine with big mounds which again do not radiate links golf. To be fair holes 15,16 and 17 were a tough little stretch of holes and do demand concentration. The greens at the course were in great condition but a tad slow, they were also large targets and rather flat which coupled with the length (just under 6000 yards off the yellows) made this course not quite the challenge i was hoping it to be. I have played worst courses than this but i'm not sure i've ever played one that had such a half hearted feel to it, u can't help but be impressed by some things here but boy was i also left feeling hollow by others.

Top course! Very interesting holes all round the course. I'd definately suggest investing in a course guide as due to the undulations it can be hard to judge distances accurately. Good clubhouse and facilities and excellent value on the 241's - I'd play here again without question

Sand Martins was a very enjoyable course to play, and has left us with several positive memories:
a) Very good value for money - £27 for day rate using 2-fore-1 vouchers.
b) Friendly member introduced himself on the first tee and made us feel welcome at the course.
c) Fairways in excellent condition - very green and fluffy. I understand that new irrigation has recently been introduced to obvious good effect.
The course itself is two separate 9's. The first is a nice parkland layout with mature trees and water. The second nine was obviously converted from some very flat land, and is more links-like in style. Having said that, the land has been used to very good effect, and some interesting features have been added (eg a huge mound in the middle of the 10th fairway) which adds to the variety of the holes.
I must admit that none of the holes have the 'wow' factor, but they are all interesting and enjoyable to play.
On the day we played (late June), the greens were very firm and not at all receptive, which was a little frustrating. However, it did mean that they were flat and true to putt on.
In summary, we really enjoyed our day at Sand Martins, and would happily play it again when we're in the area.
