Rusper Golf Club Player Reports

Rusper is a gem of a course. All the previous comments are correct, the course starts of fairly easy but then tightens up and heads into the wood lined fairways using the contours of the ever changing land. There is a great use of water around the course which is kept in very good condition. The 6th hole is very strange to look at off the tee and the 8th is not much different! The 400 yard Par 4's are a challange when the stroke index is 11+ but a joy to play and most certainly worth a second trip back.

I have played this course over the last few years and it has gone from strength to strength.
Course is now in excellent condition - greens are fantastic and the fairways and starting to take great shape.
From holes 6-14, it will challenge even the lowest handicap golfers (I play regularly with a friend who plays off 10 and he loves playing here).
Definately advise people to give it a go!

Played Rusper on the 22/6/07 on a wet day. On arriving the clubhouse doesn't look much and the first impressions arn't great, but i thought £15 with a 2-fore-1 voucher, i'll give it a chance.
From the first hole i could see that this course was kept in lovely condition (but then again so should all courses at this time of year)
The first 4/5 holes are pretty easy so make as many points as you can, because the next sequence of 9/10 holes are probably the toughest i have played. What a great test of golf. Water, narrow, narrow tree lined par 5 fairways, trees everywhere.
Very difficult to shoot your h/c round here. A must play at great value.

Since arriving from abroad and playing on many local courses in the area, I have fallen in love with this truly magnificent golf club. The course is not all that Rusper is about! From the moment you arrive and enter the Pro Shop or the Club itself you are greeted with a smile and cheery hello. The management and members alike can not do enough to make you feel welcome.
Of the course, you will not find a more suitable test for experienced golfers & beginers alike. After a good start thru 5 wide, straight forward holes you can see where the new 9 holes have developed and matured into a remarkable track from holes 6-14. This is where the 'real Rusper' experience starts. Great, Long, Water, Woodlands, Wildlife... Phew what a test and so Beautiful.
When arriving on the 15th tee -back to original course- hopefully with some shots left, you will be pushed to find 4 finishing holes with as much character.
It sounds as though I write this with some bias...Its probably true! Thats why I put my money where my mouth is and joined the club.
Come down and try Rusper, We shall see you again and again...

Really liked this course. Having read the below reviews, had mixed feelings about booking it, and at the time it was only one could get a tee time @ time wanted - but what a result it turned out to be!
Ok, so game itself was poor, but the course was fantastic - off the whites, very long (just had a week of solid rain @ end of May 06) but despite talk of boggy I thought it held up well. Greens were in great shape, if a little slow but understandable given recent weather.
A bloody good test basically - true, very narrow in parts - even the par 5s (apart from the first one) are tight all the way down which some may say is harsh in addition to the decent length.
Par 3's were not all to my taste - not a massive fan of 3 of them being 180yrds + but there we go. Definitely will be returning as I think it probably takes a couple of efforts to get to know your way around a little better, but for £25 is good value and has convinced me to be returning again.
Clubhouse is a massive let down and although didn't eat there, menu didn't look all that tempting. Looks like there is investment going on though and if this aspect improves I think it's a good all round package for one of those '20 odd mins from the M25'

Golfing Heaven. I only played Rusper due to a work friend telling me about it. I live in Reigate and usually frequent Reigate Hill (Not anymore!!!!) I always come away from Rusper with a smile on my face. It is a very tight testing course, that keeps you thinking. There are lots of trees, but if you do happen to visit them you can normally find ur ball, so not all bad (Apart from the sideways shot out;-) On ur first visit don't let the first 5 holes put you off. By this I mean there is nothng wrong with them, but they are fairly easy. It is the dogleg left 6th onwards were the real fun starts !!!!!! My favourite's are the 9th and 13th(Stroke Index 1). I played twilight Saturday just gone for £12.50 (Bargain) Drove the ball 365yds on the 9th, which is a fantastic hole. Fairway probably only 30 yds wide tree-lined all the way to the hole. I was so excited I shanked my 2nd shot to the left and into the trees. 3rd out sideways chip on and 1 put - Lovely satisfying PAR. The 13th is the first time I have managed a PAR in around 30 attempts. Play it a see what I mean. They also have 2 of these new fangdangled swing trainers EAPLANAR - It is just £10 for the first lesson.
Go Try It

I have been playing rusper for approx 4 years now.
average course good value for money, however they now have decided to increase the 2 fore 1 price by 30% mid season without informing anyone. when i said that the price increase does not make me want to come back, i was told "that your decision".
the course was value for money but with the new price its not worth it. eg the ninth green has bald patches in May!

A cracking course. I played there 2 weeks ago and went straight back in and joined. It's very good value, pretty hard and is definately a thinkers game rather than brute force. Gets a bit wet under foot but should be a real gem in the summer. However, water plays a big part on this course and the network of ponds and ditches adds to the fun.
Don Seabright (England) 05/10/04
I only discovered Rusper through a recommendation, and I am grateful to my friend! You can be forgiven for thinking this is just an ordinary parkland course after playing the first two holes, but the third is a challenging par 5 where an accurate second shot is very important. Once you get into the forest on the 8th hole - Rusper becomes like Wentworth, narrow tree lined fairways which are a real test. Listen for the clunks of golf balls against the trees! Be prepared to play sideways to get you back on the fairway. I disagree with some of the other comments - Rusper is a very good course for using your driver, hit it straight and you will be rewarded. The 17th and 18th lack a bit of character in my opinion, but the newer holes will leave you with a wish to try again and again. Bet you don't play to your handicap! Very friendly staff and fantastic value. Take tour binoculars to read the names of the planes taking off.
John Moore (England) 07/06/04
After stating I would never to return back in January 2002 I am really pleased I did. The greens and fairways on the original nine were in fantastic condition, the newer nine have improved very nicely as well. However if you are thinking of using your driver don't. It is very very tight in places. I found the best way around was to quite often use a seven iron off the tee just to get into position.
The owner has certainly spent a great deal of money making improvements and I can now reccomend a trip here.
the course has matured very nicel
Owen Mills (England) 13/05/04
Now the problems mentioned from others below have been sorted, this is an excellent course, one of the best i have played in the area (and one of the lowest green fees).
Yes, it is very hard in some spots, but surely this is what golf is about - a challenge. And yes, you can't just blast away from the tee you need to think about it... and even if you keep it straight it still takes a few rounds to truly know what your doing.
In the 8th right through to the 14th it must have some of the finest holes around, they wouldn't be out of place on a championship course. I'd reccommend to anyone who doesnt lose their temper/game at the first sign of trouble.
John Morrish (England) 24/04/04
The course layout has some great holes, which, under the right conditions, could make it a really pleasurable test of golf.
However, the signs were there if we'd looked into them a bit closer! A notice in the pro-shop about no refunds for course conditions. The pro's warning of it being "a bit wet underfoot". The guy on the practice green, practicing in wellies. The 3-ball behind us as we teed off - all playing in wellies.
Yes, you've guessed it, this course was incredibly wet. Fair enough, it had rained the day before, but prior to that there was a fairly decent period of warm, dry weather. With all credit to the club, the greens were in very good condition.
Chances of us returning - slim, I'm afraid. Which is a shame, as some of the holes look like they could be stunning if you weren't so downhearted about splodging your way from tee to green.
Peter Campbell (England) 19/04/04
First hole may lead you to question the notion that this is a tight course but you will find out in due course. It's a long enough course, but not somewhere you should risk using the driver too much.
Yes, there are a constant stream of planes ( one every couple of minutes on some holes)and they fly low enough to cast big shadows.
Course is certainly challenging. It is reasonably priced, as it has competition from the likes of Rookwood.
Food was good, but changing rooms at the moment are inadequate for a society. I don't think they even had a mirror.
However well worth a round or two.
Chris Pilbeam (England) 29/10/03
i cant think of anything bad about rusper it puts most courses to shame of course its tight and it needs to be played sensibly
Patrick (UK) 01/06/03
I played this course on Wednesday, the first time I had played in 4 years. However, although my golfing skills took a while to return to me, the course was great. This is what golf is really about. You versus the course. Each hole at Rusper is different, and makes you think several shots in advance. For example, hole 9 is a long (514 yards) par 5, with some nasty trees. By hitting a 3 iron, followed by a 5 wood off the fairway, i was in a position to pitch on and putt down for a birdie (which to my delight I did). As regard to some of the comments below, i feel the course has now bedded in very nicely...to such an extent that I really couldn't tell which the nine new holes were (apparently they are 5-13).
In the end, it's a great course, challenging yet rewarding, and set among fantastic scenery. The planes can be annoying, but all it takes is to wait a few seconds while they're directly overhead and then you hardly notice them.
heather (sussex) 08/01/03
as a lady member of Rusper golf club i was amazed by some of the above comments. Yes ok when the new 9 opened it was tough but the greenstaff have done a truly amazing job and now it is (qouted in a golf newapaper) a gem to be discovered.
I have birdied the eighth(off the red tees) and one thing we learn and that is to play the course, it is a wonderfull course and will only get better! Anyone who can play to thier handicap at Rusper can play anywhere, who wants to play an easy course.
And last but not least the members are really friendly, with
many new members joining each month this club will only go forward.
Nev (UK) 07/10/02
Maybe it's because they took more than 35 minutes to get my food order (just chips) that I'm not going to rate this course highly, but as I played the first two holes quite well I'd like to think that I'd forgotten about that by the time I had to reflect on the merits of the course. There are a few nice holes on this course, but for a lot of them I felt that the fairways were so narrow that even good shots could be punished. I don't mind courses that are hard and fair, but this course has too many holes that are just plain hard for the sake of it. If you can hit it long and straight everytime, then this course will hold no fears. Me, I'm not going there ever again.
P Milner (UK) 04/09/02
I have played Rusper a couple of times during late Spring and Summer. I am pleased to see it is not only improving all the time, but the enhancements are absolutely the right ones. When the new 9 are as well presented as the old nine this will be an exceptionally good test of golf. I am sure over the next year the fairways and greens will become better as they bed in. The club is friendly and welcomes visitors with open arms which is a breath of fresh air - long may this course and club go from strength to strength.
Niall (UK, West Sussex) 23/08/02
I think Rusper is a great little course. I am a beginner (started playing golf 4 months ago) and while some of the holes are really tough - 10 in particular - if you can hit straight, you will get away with it. Needless to say, on five holes I patently didn't get away with it. The ongoing work makes some of the holes a little ugly but this is a course that doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. The staff are friendly and the clubhouse is homely. It does though offer chances to test your game and I came away having learnt a lot about mine! I'll be going back
Alan King (UK) 16/07/02
I play Rusper regulary. The new 9 holes have added greatly with meny improments being added daily. Whilst some holes are "tight" they are very playable with course management being a at premium. The greens are far superior to many courses I could mention. If you can play Rusper you should be able to play just about anywhere. Play it, you'll learn alot. One thing is certain you will receive a warm and friendly welcome.
Out of interest I'm a member at Ifield another local course.
Andy R (England) 09/07/02
I've played Rusper regularly since last year and agree the new nine was very new. There has been an enourmous amount of work done since, including a new lake at the 10th, and it is now not far behibd the old nine holes in quality...a credit to the green staffs abilities. It is the most challenging course I have every played...and I've played a few in the last 25 years! I challenge any one to play to there handicap here..if you dare...Superb.
Rob (USA) 02/07/02
This course it tough ! I'm usually resident in the US and have made this my local because it has some near on impossible holes. It is a new course so very rough in places but it very tight especially the par 5's which are all 500+ (from white's but demand an iron off the tee). Agree with comments on hole 8 ... impossible/ I'm hitting a 5 iron, followed by a 3 wood and hoping for a pitch and 1 putt. Major downside of the course is that it is on the Gatwick flight path so very noisy. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has par'd it from the white's.
John Moore (UK) 31/01/02
I used to enjoy playing Rusper when it was a 9 hole course, it had a number of interesting holes, which were tight in places. Last year it was extended to 18 holes, but with diastrous results, the greens on the new nine were very poor, in fact on most of them you could easily think you were still on the fairway. One hole deserves a special mention, the 8th, this is almost impossible to play, in fact in a greensomes match we won the hole with an 8.
As you can guess I will not be returning!!
