Played here in a small society on a sweltering Friday afternoon.
This is a gem of a course especially for mid handicappers like myself. If you can keep the ball straight there are good scores to be made.
Relatively short with plenty of water to keep it interesting, well worth the gree fee!

A lot is made about the amount of water at Pyrford - the yardage booklet proclaims it comes into play on 17 of the 18 holes - but this is exaggerated. Personally, I think it's only an issue on holes 3, 9, 12, 14 and 18. For most of the rest of the time, it'll only really trouble the high handicappers.
In any case, it's not the water that's the obstacle to scoring well here – it's the rough. I was told that since Crown Golf took over, the grass has been grown to almost links-like proportions and - I can speak from experience - they're not wrong. With this long grass covering all the mounds, the course has an occasional links aura in places. And if you go into it and don't watch your ball like a hawk, definitely advise playing a provisional!
Pyrford is short – in fact just 5720 off the yellows and the whites (6256) are irritatingly reserved for the members. There are far too many short par 4s – off the yellows, six of them are under 355 yards. However, the combination of the long stuff and the wet stuff mean that accuracy is vital. If you boom it but are wayward, take plenty of balls. In fact, if you're wayward at all, take plenty of balls.
The best hole in my mind is the 165 par 3 second which plays to an attractive green surrounded by rough-covered mounds. A good hole to score 3 on.
At 592 yds off the whites the 9th is a brute of a par 5, especially with water up half of the right hand side of the hole, which you then have to cross to reach the green. The 13th (414 yds off the whites) has echoes of the third hole on Saunton's East Course, with a semi-blind drive (off the whites) and a second that's longer than you think. The 14th is a teaser of a driveable par 4 (254 yds off the yellows) but it's in the drink if you come up short.
All in all, Pyrford is an interesting experience but strategically one-dimensional and repetitive in places. And if you think that good courses test every shot in your bag, that's certainly not the case here. However, at £25 for a twilight round, it's not bad value.

Played here midweek April 06 .(£24 using a county card).
Peter Alliss designed inland links style course with water everywhere.Attractive course where most holes are visually pleasing from the tee.Due to the water & bunkering you have to think a bit off the tee & will hit as many 3 woods as drivers .
Despite the hazards it's not the most challenging course .I'd recommend playing here only in a 3 or 4 ball as it does seem to be busy at all times. We played as a 2 ball & despite being told that there was a 90 minute gap before our tee time when i phoned a few hours before, we were held up for most of the front 9 (like being on a municipal ) & skipped holes 10-12 & played them last.I enjoyed the back 9 holes more.
The greens were fairly slow & the fairways in the 2nd shot areas heavily divoted .There are very few weak holes here & lots of memorable ones.Despite all the good points, i would say about £20 would be about the right green fee here & i think Traditions next door is better value.Even though it's well designed & in a nice setting there was something slightly lacking here for me as it didn't feel totally top drawer & exclusive.Quite good fun & worth playing once but maybe that's it.

Great little course. If you have not played much golf before, this will be a stern test. Not many courses have 23 acers of water. If you fancy making a full day of it, why not play this one in the morning and Traditions in the afternoon. It's quater of a mile up the road. Well worth it!

I have just played Pyrford on a nice warm tuesday afternoon and what a wonderful place it is. Although it has a lot of water around and across the course it had a definite feel of a links course as they had allowed the fairways to get rather brown and with the positioning and size of the bunkering. Although I was only playing a singles match, we played off the white tees and I still managed to shoot 2 under par nett. The course makes you think with every shot but you don't have to be a long hitter to have fun. The highlight for me was being able to par the 457 yd 11th (stroke index 1) with a 2 wood, 3 iron to green side bunker...bunker shot to 4 feet and 1 putt...not surprisingly it won me the hole. I would recommend this course to anybody, especially in these conditions but I gather that during the winter with the rough rather harsh and the wind blowing, then it would be a completely different kettle of fish!!
All the staff were friendly and with it being a public course, go and have a game...I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Would agree with most of the comments above- a short but challenging course, and rather pricey (£40 for a weekday a bit much in my view). As a mid-to-high handicapper water and bunkers made it tough, but shortness still made pars very possible if straight off the tee. Played off whites, would recommend others do the same- some holes would be far too short off the yellows.
