College Pines Golf Club Player Reports

I'd class College Pines as a very average course, we played during February with our society which in my opninion is the best time of year to play due to the excellent drainage. The course is easy to play as reflected in the high stableford scores. We felt the greens fees at £22 are a little steep for the the condition of the course, and time of year, the greens were in poor condition, inconsistent, patchy and bobbly, the fairways were sparse and most shots felt like playing off hard ground. During our round we experienced something I've never seen before, six motor cross bikes riding around the paths of the course for five minutes ! although not a fault of the course interupted play as he all stood watching in disbelief. In terms of socities our welcome was warm, very accomodating and friendly, all staff involved were excellent and we were well looked after. The food was also excellent and were flexible as four of our society didn't show up. One word of warning though , we were charged 50% green fees for the no shows which I feel is a little harsh as it didn't affect the tee times too much. I appreciate the course is busy but we had to find £52 out of the blue which for me as a society orangiser was an inconvenience on the day. Overall a good day out, a good winter course, hampered by some harsh charging, poor greens and six motorbikes.

Our 20 strong Society played two rounds here on Saturday 28th September. I can't say our first impressions were terribly strong when standing on the 1st tee at 0730 and seeing what appeared to be a rather featureless downhill dogleg par 5. The next couple of holes weren't terribly interesting and as several other report writers have mentioned, it was rather slow! We were due off the first again at 1230 and needed to have our pre ordered sandwiches as well.
However, things got better and better and the holes much more interesting from the 4th onwards. Play also speeded up and we finished in just over four and a quarter hours leaving time for an adequate rest stop. Pre ordered sandwiches and soup were served to us as the five four ball came in and the staff were exceptionally friendly.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable and challenging experience which provided a number of us with decent scores. The greens were a little slow but absolutely true and in very good condition given the high number of players per day. An excellent course for visiting Societies such as ourselves on a Saturday.

the course is a good winter course but the problem with it and its a big problem is that the course is too busy played at the weekend and after six holes we had been playing for two hours we came off on the thirteenth after four hours and this happens most weeks , i think its pure greed from the course owners and totally unacceptable.

Aesthetically college pines looks the part from the car park as you view the practice area, putting green, and the clubhouse etc. And at £21.00 for a weekend round on a non muni course the price cant really be faulted either!
What was the problem then? why wasn't I enjoying my weekend golf this week? I didn't realise what was wrong at first....... but i had plenty of time to figure it out! far too much time.
Three and a half hours is a reasonable time for a round of golf. The problem was that after three and a half hours we had just finished the 11th hole.
Some other people on here have said that the pines having large landing areas and generous fairways. This is not the case! some of the fairways were down to 25 yards in width. This was followed by extremely narrow second cuts leading into deep rough. Slightly wayward shots were followed by a long drawn out search for a missing ball. This was happening all over the course. four balls, three balls whatever......... everybody was looking for balls and slowing the game up to a point that was murderously slow.
At the end of the eleventh pete and I gave up the ghost and walked in. I HAVE NEVER, EVER done that on a course i am playing for the first time.
Find another way of making the course challenging for god's sake. Tight fairways and deep rough just kill a courses playability. I hate to say it, but, another visit here is not on the cards for me........ it's just too slow.
thumbs down.... 3 - 10

Played the course yesterday morning after getting a last minute booking and it was excellent.
Friendly log-cabin style clubhouse and a great restaurant area with loads of golf memorabilia.
Drainage at College Pines is second to none and the course is rightly very busy at all times (we played at 6.30am!).
Great for the beginner with generous landing areas off the tee and fine, firm greens. Fantastic views of the surrounding countryside, pine forest and Worksop College.
Couldn't be faulted.
NB Weekday round now £15 and Weekend £21.
