Marriott Hanbury Manor Hotel & Country Club Player Reports
Martin Eady (England) 02/05/06
We played this course at the end of April on a "special break" package. It cost £125 and was worth every penny.
The hotel is five-star and has everything that goes with it. It is expensive but you know that before you get there. They did provide an excellent service though as you would expect.
The course is very good, with the design of each of the holes over two distinctive nines being exemplery. The greens were hard, fast and true, with very few bobbles. That in itself is worth a mention for a course in April!
The fairways were probably the worst feature of the course, albeit this is all relative. On the whole they were in very good nick, although they seemed to have very many divots, either poorly repaired or not repaired at all. Nevertheless this didn't spoil the experience very much at all.
What was enjoyable was the fact that this is a top-notch course which didn't neccessitate hitting the ball as far as possible with each shot. It isn't very long (off the yellows)but that added to the enjoyment rather than taking anything from it.
The starter and other staff were excellent (although our tee-times were put back 50 minutes to allow a club match to go off - something that wasn't advised to us!).

we played here on the 1st weekend in april and i was going to come on here a right a huge review but looking at the others i see that rob hedley in 04 sums it up pretty much how i found it but with better english so i'll let u all read his. But what i will say is i was still finding divuts untreated and pitch marks on the greens, but aside from that the course was in top top condition and that the staff at the hotel were great, everything u would expect and more.
i will leave my review on this note. if u want to go away, be looked after and play golf on a course in great condition go here. if u want to go away and play golf on a great course look elsewhere

What a course!! It sounds like the gentleman listed complaining about the cost of the course has never played this course so should not pass judgement on it. I played this course the weekend just gone in mostly sunshine with the odd rain shower. It bucketed down for about 10 minutes but the greens weren't affected at all. The greens on all the holes were fantastic, smooth, fast and true when putting yet soft and grippy for approach shots. I was totally confident on my approach shots that the ball would react exactly the same as the previous hole.
The overall course presentation was amazing, firm cross-hatch cut fairways that the ball bounded down. Reasonable rough unless you really missed the fairway. Ball cleaners on every hole that were filled, unlike some course were they are a dry as Ghandi's flip flop, with a towel, a bin ad a spike cleaner. The course layout was excellent, as mentioned the front nine in downland style and quite hilly and the back nine is classic parkland. I loved the whole course but I think I loved the front nine a little more.
I was a little shocked to find that people still don't repair their pithmarks on the green and some of the par 3 tees had untreated divots. The divot mixture box is no more that 3 feet away, why on earth do people do it????
With regard to the Hotel, it is fabulous where you do not have to lift a finger and are treated like royalty. As you may have gathered I loved the whole weekend even if I did have to pay for beauty treatment for my girlfriend whilst I was enjoying the fantastic course. My advice is the stay at the hotel, play the course and then you will see what I am talking about.

I have now played this course quite a few times. The first time I played, I was still a bit of a novice golfer and I couldn't quite see what the fuss was about. It is not the most beautiful course, and it is long and difficult.
However, as my golf has improved so has my appreciation of the course. It is effectively 2 courses in one. The first 9 are downland with water, the second nine are parkland, with still more water. Every hole makes you plan your shots. None more so than the 2nd par 5, where in order to get an aggressive score you have to play over a 100 yard lake a and a series of bunkers to make the green. The course is in fabulous condition. The greens are slick and smooth and play very fairly. The rough does not seem quite as dense as it was during the Spring, making it a lot easier to find your ball. All in all a satisfying day's golf.

No doubt that this is a nice course kept in beautiful condition, but is it worth £75? Even as a members guest its expensive and if you're going to pay that kind of money play at Brockett Hall which is far superior in every respect. Hanbury is a course designed for big competitions, corporate days, and tourists with big wallets. So only play if someone else is paying!!!
