Bob McKenna (England) 25/03/08

Played the course today.

With the 2 fore 1 offer went round for just £12.50. Well designed course, no temporary greens or tees. The course is currently undergoing some renovation but the greens and fairways are in great condition. I would say one of the best pay and play courses I have played in the entire London area. Well designed and most greens provide a stern test of putting ability. Watch out for the bunkers, they are tough to get out of!

Club house staff were friendly and helpful. Food in the upstairs dining area was also good. Very modern atmosphere which is not a bad thing in my opinion.

All in all a great day out and highly recommended, especially if you can play Mon-Fri when the course seems quiet.

Polarise is not a word that come to mind, awful fits the bill better....last time I played was felled by an errant ball from a fairway coming in the opposite direction, you walk back to the tee following a line any slicer will take, loads of blood and concussion,an inch lower and would have lost an eye according to the hospital,I still have Titleist impressed into my skull

Pretty sure we could have claimed damages, but I do not wish to be part of the blame culture,so maybe they have altered some of the dangers, but please be careful.

Of course I didnt finish the round and from what little recall I have of the day found it slow beyond belief, greens were actually ok,clubhouse like a modern monstrosity but ok with good views, better in the vicinity.

Sorry to sound so negative, not something I ever like to do

Seems like this place polarises opinion. For me it's a good track. Sure there are some areas that could be improved but it's a great design, really testing every part of your game. It's not particularly short, and you have to think your way round.

BUT, on the downside, the practice facilities (such as they are) are desperate, there's no sand in the bunkers, and the greens were just abysmal when I was there today. My other gripe is that there are a lot of blind tee shots and only one bell on the course (on the 18th) so you have no idea whether the group in front is clear.

That's a shame because it really is a top layout. With a little TLC it's got potential to be a great course and none of the issues above are difficult to fix. At the moment though you'd have to say there is better value for money around.

Having read the last comment and a few others, I thought I would be in for a disappointment. That was not the case when I turned up on a nice wednesday morning.

Thought the staff were helpful, especially as we turned up half hour before our time and was told we could go early if we wished. The course for this time of year was in great condition, i agree with the pitchmarks on the greens but you've got to expect that on any busy pay and play course. Thought the course was challenging, especially holes on the back nine which needed strategic planning. Being a 3 handicapper i thought i would be disappointed but i wasn't and only took us 3hrs 55mins for a fourball with people infront of us. Recommended.

Played Stockley Park on 7 October. I don't know why I keep going back!

I played in a 4ball. We were due to go off at about 11am - by the time it got to us they were already running 40minutes behind on start times. Clearly the 8 minutes allowed between groups is insufficient for fourballs, since it is a pay and play course.

The greens were in a poor state, with a lot of unrepaired pitch marks and were showing the effects of a lot of wear and tear.

With the fourball two groups ahead of us having departed the course, the twoball in front put on a spurt and gained a hole on us - the ranger then arrived and asked us to speed up as people in groups behind were threatening to ask for their money back. As there was a hole clear behind us, we didn't feel we were holding anyone up - but maybe he had a point. However, the unfortunates referred to were people who, sadly for them, found themselves behind a large society outing of rather poor, slow golfers - again a symptom of the pay and play, revenue counts mentality of the course management. The ranger informed us that Stockley park was a 4 hour golf course and we should be pressing on. I nearly choked - the last time I played here I walked off on the 13th tee having been on the course for 5 1/2 hours!!

In summary, avoid this course like the plague on Sunny weekend days - £37 to play a slow round, with greens in poor condition, just isn't worth it. and, in retrospect, it really isn't even that challenging - in fact, it's quite a boring course, with no really interesting holes to recommend it. I'll definitely dig my heels in next time a mate suggests playing here!

Ian Thomas (England) 15/07/06

A municipal golf course built on land fill by none other than Robert Trent Jones. As you would expect from such an illustrious course designer this is an interesting test of golf, though I couldn't spot much resemblance to his famous major championship courses. It suffers from having public access throughout, so there is the potential for interesting diversions such as local lads stealing your balls whilst you are walking up to the green and then trying to sell them back to you. Course maintenance is no more than fair, with the majority of bunkers susceptable to having all their sand washed away. Clubhouse and proshop is a modernist style, but pretty basic in what it has to offer. Can get crowded and very slow, particularly at weekends. If you can find a quiet weekday it is excellent value on a 241.

I have only been playing golf for around one year now and have been on several courses in the Middlesex area and in my opinion Stockley Park is one of the best. I have played Stockley Park around three times now. The course is challenging and well maintained with good greens and fairways. The staff are friendly, helpful and accomodating without the stuffy attitude you get from some of the older clubs. Can get busy at Weekends but they try and fit you in. They also take a 2-fore-1 during the week. Highly recommended!!!

see my earlier negative feedback back in 08/05. i feel i ought to write again after playing this sunday afternoon just to make it fair ( after giving it a miss for the past few months). Tee off at 10am, finished at 2.30pm. So 4.5 hr would be average for a 3 balls though we could have finished under 4hr if not for the group infront of us.

What an improvement overall !! the couse was in good shape, Credit to the management. It seems they have done some serious investment over the last yr, staffs were polite and curteous. food price was reasonable. The green was £37 which i thought was fair for this stadard of course.

I would certainly return no doubt as long as they keep up with the good work.

Why did I return this time after my initial bad experience last August?? you may ask... it's the lay out of the holes. I believe it ranks right at the top amongst courses around London. high handicapper.. you have been warned.

I found the course and greens in good condition last week. Our round was a little slow, a bit under 4 and a half hours midweek, but no long waits.

It is a reasonably interesting and mediumly challenging course, and we will be playing again. Unfortuneately previous players had been very bad about replacing divots and repairing pitch marks.

At £10 for seniors it is extremely good value.

i played here in the week after it had rained hard and expected it to be very wet but it was very dry. The course is a good challenge and the wind was very tough due to the extrodinary wind. I you buy a course guide as the yardages are confusing and decieving. £23 in the week quite expensive but a nice course to play on the odd occassion.

greens had just been spiked so not brilliant and the fairways where generally good apart from some divots etc which is expected on a public cousrse.

overall a good course to give a go and would recomend it.

Played the course on Sunday 16th Oct. Good course but a bit of a letdown for the price, £37 a round.

Greens were not in the best condition and the lake between the 9th and 18th had dried to an unsightly mud-pit. No on-course marshall and the pace was incredibly slow, round in about 5 hours.

That said, the course is a very good test with a great variety of holes and with a bit more care could well be worth the green fee in future.

A Daly (England) 25/09/05

Played Stockley this morning, found the course to be in excellent condition, very self-contained, with well defined fairways, etc. Yes, it is expensive, so it is in my book as "one to play very occasionally". The upside is, the course wasn't crowded today and there were no delays. At 6002 yards off the yellows it isn't short, but the fairways are quite generous. Beware, the rough is punishing, so my advice is, put the driver away! And the greens were faster than your average pay-and-play course. Considering the nearness to Heathrow, there is very little urban noise and the flight path (at least today) wasn't a problem. My only complaint was the litter left around the course, why do people do this?? All in all, a good morning's golf and recommended.

I hane been a regular golfer at Stockley Park for the last 3 years now, I can honestly say it the best layout of any course in the area, but thats to be expected when it has been designed by Trent Jones Snr. Stockley is unique because you can play it for public golf course prices. I have never taken more that 5 hours to play the course so I don't understand how its taken some people an exzngerated 6 hours plus. The staff at the course couldn't be more helpful. Well worth a vistit by anyone who likes to play on quality golf courses.

I played here midweek and therefore didn't suffer the slowness mentioned in these pages. Found it to be enjoyable and great value for money, a tenner on 241s. Not a desperately challenging course and doesn't punish the bad shot really but it's nice and close to London and if you have a day off work I'd suggest playing there.

Michael Hindley (England) 04/04/05

Read this if you have cant afford to spend 6 hours on a golf course waiting for the players in front to clear out of the way.

I turned up at Stockley Park on Sunday with my usual 4-ball pals. We were scheduled to tee off at 11:36 but didnt get going until 20 minutes later (despite being at the course in plenty of time).

We should have taken this as an indication of things to come. It then took us 2 hours to get through the first 5 holes!

No complaint with the players in front. They were neither slow nor poor players. The simple truth is that the club knew the weather was nice so jammed as many people onto the course to rake in as much cash as they could in a single day.

So for the first time in my life I walked off the course after only 5 holes to demand an explanation / refund. Despite the fact that the sign in the clubhouse states that "on a busy day a round should take NO longer than 4.5 hrs" we were denied any compensation or indeed explanation.

I was told that the course speeds up after the front 5 holes which is just as well as we were on for a record 8 hour round!

The club have a no refund policy so the best we could do was send a letter of complaint and await their response.

I strongly advise you all to avoid this course unless you have absolutely nothing else to do all day + have the patience of a saint.

Played Last Saturday with a few freinds - As one would expect from a 'Public' Course at the weekend - it was crowded hence the pace of game slow - but that is expected.

On a positive note - the course is well maintained and rather plesant to play on.

On the Negative and what can't be justified is the price at £37 per person and the same price for seniors from a 'Public' Course

I think they need to review the pricing structure otherwise it will be just a matter of time before market forces kick in !

Holes 9,18 were marshalled (not very well)as they are close to the clubhouse - but for a weekend, when slower golfers need proding along - the marshals should really move past these holes and keep it flowing.

As stated above - We did enjoy the game , lovely day etc etc - but afterwards , we all agreed for a public course we would not play there again until the price was lowered to match other courses !

Pete Walsh (England) 31/08/04

Very overpriced course and as stated before crowded with inexperienced golfers so very slow play. The design is a typical new course design, lots of odd landscaping, irrelevant lumps and bumps and an attempt at creating an american style - that said it is a good challenege and in good condition, the greens being receptive and well paced. However at £36 for a weekend round you could do a lot better

Geoff Doig (England) 07/06/04

Feel jealous of Steve Williams comment about 3.5 hour round. Played yesterday with a tee time of 12:40, eventually teeing off at 1:30 "due to congestion". At one point prior to teeing off a 3 ball was walking back to the club house in disgust after waiting for with 3 groups on every tee for the first 4 holes.

My 4 ball followed a 3-ball of muppets with carts around for 5 hours. At no point were we called through, even though many times one cart was on the opposite fairway looking for another errant drive (on the 3nd attempt usually), with the second cart either parked up in the middle of the fairway, or searching for his own ball in the bush.

I can only encourage people of limited golfing ability attempting to play the game, however if they don't understand proper etiquette on the course, course marshals should be on patrol to provide some suitable advice. Finishing the 18th nearly 6 hours after our original tee time is a disgrace!!

Stockley Park is a well presented golf course, however it is let down completely by poor management of the tee times (where is a starter?!?!), and ZERO management of the speed of play throughout the day. £36 per person is a fair amount to pay, but a least we are getting our money's worth. Ha!

In future, I will choose to drive the extra 1/2 hour to play at course where a round can be had in less than 4 hours.

#

Steve Williams (England) 02/03/04

I read the reviews on this site before playing at Stockley Park some of which I thought were a bit harsh. There are tight holes but references to forget the driver etc grossly overexaggerate the situation IMHO. £35 is just not on for this course in comparison to say Ashford Manor or Fullwell or even Farnham Park (Public Course) dare I say it for £20 odd quid.

Most of the greens were frozen solid when I played with no mention of this before we set off which was a dissappointment not to mention hugely damaging. A few fairways were in a real state 50 yrds short one in particular the 14th (I think) on the uphill slope looked like the chainsaw massacre. The problem is all in the price in the final analysis and I too personally expected better for the money.

P.S.The Clubhouse was begging for a broken window the day I played. Before my Tee time I saw at least two different groups of people grovelling around the putting green area looking for their overhit approaches to the 18th (fools).... before I did the same 3.5 hrs later come my turn.

Myrt (UK) 16/06/03

Make no mistake, Stockley Park is designed for tournament golf (by Robert Trent Jones Snr no less) and this is evident from the off, with tight fairways, trees and bushes aplenty and strategically placed bunkers on every hole. Add to that several water hazards, blind tee shots and subtlely contoured greens and you have an interesting, challenging layout that requires you to be on top of your game to record a good score. Although some may argue that the surrounding business park and the views of Heathrow Airport detract from the experience, the course is a triumph for urban redevelopment, being built on a disused landfill site (so I am reliably informed). I can understand why some people baulk at the green fee (£25 Mon - Fri, £35 Sat/Sun), this is a public course after all, but this is far more than your average pay and play set up.

Most greens are not visible from the tees which makes it a challenging course. The greens were superbly kept and well watered allowing you to really attack the pin. Fairways are lush and yardage charts are very detailed. Only problem was that on some holes it was a touch soggy around the greens. Course marshall helped speed up play on our society day which was great. Would definately play there again. Use 2-for-1 vouchers which makes paying £17.50 a steal for a course of this quality (PGA Seniors Tour course).

David Wiblin (UK) 20/08/02

I think my return to golf after an absence of five years was an initiation by fire having to play this course, but it was nonetheless extremely enjoyable. Too many courses, I seem to remember, were a simple bash up to a clearly visible green followed by a three-putt finish. This course, however, offered much more of an interesting challenge. Of particular importance was the course caddy (a book not the obligatory lackie running around offering superfluous advice) which enables you to give some approximate direction to your blind strokes. Evidence of green repairs (some good, some not so) shows that they are keen to maintain their credibility as a professionally maintained course. Compared to the distant memories of courses I've played in the past, this one is almost certainly worth playing again.

Leave the big dog (driver) at home it is not needed here, lots of blind shots with irons off the tee. Reasonable layout with some good holes but the bunkers need some sand in!

Good finish for matchplay. As with most public places in London far too many people of an antipodean nature!

Charles Gordon (UK) 19/03/02

It's been a little while since I played here but when I did I found that if your game wasn't in top shape you would probably get found out around this track. It's not always in the best of condition which is a shame considering it's over £30 for a round. Plus, due to its poularity it can be really slow going at weekends. To be honest (particularly for Londoners), better courses are to be found for less money if you go a few junctions more down the M4.

OK obviously Stockley Park has come in for a bit of a slating on this page but I’m going to stick up for it – well relatively speaking anyway!

First off, this course represents a triumph for urban (or rather suburban?) golf. There’s something vaguely surreal about playing golf adjacent to the gleaming buildings of the business park and with vistas over Heathrow and the outer reaches of west London.

In a sense, the whole place was very different to what I expected. Instead of being barren and open with each hole separated by a few windswept trees, it was a pleasant surprise to find each hole almost sunk down into its own little world and lined with bushes and small trees. Narrow fairways on many of the holes demand accurate tee shots otherwise those bushes and trees quickly start to amplify your score!

There aren’t many hugely memorable holes but the Par 4 second will test your mettle as you shoot to a green surrounded by water on three sides, the challenging Par 3 fourth is always longer than you think and the picturesque long Par 5 thirteenth is, well, picturesque and long.

The fairways are often lush and well watered. However, some of the greens have obviously struggled to retain their condition over the recent winter.

For Londoners, it certainly gets full marks for convenience, being situated just a stone’s throw from M4 J4.

And in purely golfing terms, it’s an interesting course and one that’s surprisingly tricky to score well on.

How does one rate a golf course? Many criteria come immediately to mind. One can think of accessibility, setting, course design, maintenance, speed of play, etiquette of other players, price, club house facilities and so on. Each of us enjoys different aspects of the game to varying degrees.

I enjoyed playing Stockley Park because the course design which overall offers an excellent test of skill and character.

If you are looking to play golf around the West London area I would strongly suggest that you think about alternative courses in the area. Having played some of the public courses in the area, I thought I would give myself a treat and play Stockley Park thinking it would be a richer experience being a private club. How wrong I was. Firstly the staff were totally unapproachable, they just didn't seem to want to deal with me. The next complaint was the cost - at over £30 a round I would expect a course in at least a reasonable condition. Again I was bitterly disappointed. Before teeing off I like to hit a couple of shots to warm up but there was no practice ground. Once on the course I didn't think I would ever get off. I was on the course for over five and a half hours, two and a half of those on the front nine. The course itself was quite tough, but playing off the yellow tees made it alot easier. The greens were patchy and bumpy and the tees uneven. The one redeeming feature was that the fairways which were in good condition but were littered (in places)with un-replaced divots. Once I had finally finished the round my friends and I went to have some food, however upon reaching the clubhouse we were turned away as there was a wedding on. My advice for anyone who is thinking of playing the course there are many better courses in the area that are far more enjoyable (and quicker to go round).

#

Micholig Jusfhated (England) 20/11/01

Being used to private courses, I was very disapointed to say the very least. Tee off was delayed by twenty minutes which was probably down to only 8 minute intervals. It took us one and a half hours to reach the fourth tee and when we did there was a queue. The greens were in a very poor condition having just been holotised, almost like putting on Brocolli. When we arrived at the beautiful thirteenth hole we were put off by a strange cry of "Hold your line" from one of the ajoining holes.

Having read a golfing publication that likened Stockley park to "The Valderama of Middlesex"

I can only assume the author had noy played the magnificent Spanish layout.

Five and a half hours later we arrived exhausted at the clubhouse only to be told it was shut for a wedding. More like the Val Doonican of Middlesex"

Played this course on 29/6/01. Tough course - fairly long and is unforgiving if you miss the fairway by much. Well placed fairway bunkers mean you need to be on your game to score well. Not a course for beginners.

The fairways were in excellent condition, the bunkers were a bit patchy and the greens were good for a public course but slightly disappointing given the general condition of the rest of the course. The bar/restaurant with an elevated view over the 9th and 18th greens was a real bonus! At £24 on a week day it's not cheap - but definitely superior to most public courses.

#

joe sebastian (malaysia) 29/06/01

Be prepared to lose loads of balls! The par 4's are short but the narrow fairways leave no room for error whatsoever - many fairways are also well-bunkered. On the day I played, the rough was long which made it difficult to find any ball which had bounced in - I don't know if this is always the case or not.

Short straight hitters will do better than the long hitters on this course. I hit a few really good drives on several holes but ended up running out of fairway. If you love smashing big drives onto wide fairways, I suggest you look elsewhere!
