Bearwood Lakes Golf Club Player Reports

Magnificent golf course. Greens fast and true but can be difficult to hold. Fairways like carpets. Rough penal. Beautiful ambience and scenery. Helpful and friendly staff. Layout interesting with every hole offering a new and exciting challenge. You are doing very well if you can play to handicap on this course.

Played this course on a pleasant summer's evening. What a course! The carpet-like fairways are a pleasure to play from, the semi is fair and the rough is rough... The USGA spec greens were fast and true. So if you were able to pick the right line and pace on these wonderfully undulating greens, you knew it wouldn't get any unexpected bobbles.
Unfortunately I didn't get to sample the clubhouse, so I'll just have to come back!

You know what? We played Bearwood Lakes yesterday and played a new high profile club just east of Bristol last week. Talk about chalk and cheese. I think the main difference is that this one is superbly designed, in utterly imacculate condition (thanks to Phil Beale and team)and is all set in the most stunning of locations whereas the Bristol one isn't. But there is so much more. One of the things that go to make up for an enjoyable golfing experience is that X factor, that feeling of quality, the ambience of the place and this one has that in abundance. At Bearwood you feel priviledged and honoured to be driving up the entrance drive where at those other shall we say slightly pretentious venues, the tendency is to feel priviledged to be leaving. Classic parkland with hints of heathland, great holes that challenge the better player but are not too daunting for the less experienced and where thought is rewarded as much as brawn and as for the condition, you won't find better. So I say to the owners of that Bristol club, get over here and find out what a real golf club should look like, although they probably won't let you on.

Bearwood Lakes is without doubt one of the best courses in the South of England, and since it has only been open since July 96 it must also be ranked among the top 10 new courses in the country.
Mostly carved through gently undulating woodland, Bearwood Lakes is always in top condition. The immaculate greens have been constructed to USGA specification and the lush fairways are fully irigated.
Unfortunately the course is only open to members and their guests, but if you do have an oppurtunity to play don't miss it - it will be a memorable experience.
