Farleigh Court Golf Club Player Reports
Sarah Lane (England) 13/08/07
I played Farleigh Court in a club friendly match last weekend and while I agree that the rough can be punishing (I lost one ball), if you manage to keep the ball straight - the fairways are pretty generous - you are OK. The greens had been hollow tined and sanded so they were quite slow but once I had adjusted to the speed, I found them true. There were new flags and cups (see previous comment). Incidentally, my impression may have been coloured by the fact my partner and I won our 4BBB match (and our club beat Farleigh 1½ to 2½) but the best bit was I scored a gross 85 (nett 65). It just shows, gentlemen, that if you hit straight and don't try and smash the ball out of sight, there's a score to be made there!

I played at Farleigh Court recently left extremely frustrated. I play off 6 and being a very long hitter decided to play off the back tees. I was having an ok day and by that I mean I was hitting the ball well but not dead centre. The problem is that this course punishes a moderately wayward shot way too severely. I have no problem with being penalised by being in the rough but should be able to find a ball which wonders 5 yards from the fairway and not blow the hole. Would only return to the course when they trim the 2nd cut to levels where one can find the ball or on a pro tour where someone in the gallery will spot the ball for me! Greenkeepers also need to understand that having to look for balls slows down play and irritates all concerned!

I have played this course over a number of years and it's not been maintained to the high standards of 5 years ago.
The course markers and flags are scruffy and the fairways and greens can only be described as average.
Oxford Hotels is promising to spend money on the club house and changing rooms that again appear well worn.
I have played some very nice courses however and know that this course will not look it's best until May.
Give it a go then!

Farleigh is playable pretty well throughout the year, without resorting to temporary greens. The course offers a fair challenge for most mid to high handicappers and has a decent variety of holes. The first and second are relatively easy, providing you, hopefully, with a positive start. The 13th is no more than a 'pitch and putt' hole, but the 16th is a lovely downhill par 3. 17 and 18 offer a tough finish.
I notice that buggies weren't available according to a comment in '03, but they are now. My only problem with the course is the rough, which is far too penal. Make sure you bring a lot of balls with you!

Didn't realise until I saw some local advertising that you could get a green fee at this course - am I glad I discovered the ad! Farleigh Court has a great set up, with an interesting mix of 27 holes, course in great condition with superb greens. I understand that Swallow have put a great deal of cash into improving the course and have all intentions of continuing to invest in this delightful club - a great day out with green fees also really reasonable. The Clubhouse is relaxed and very friendly, the staff made you feel really welcome. Will defnitely be back.
