As I am 71 and have been playing golf since the age of 15,I found the Spitfire at West Malling to be a very testing course especially the back 9. The golf fee of £25 for 18 holes I found I little on the expensive side. The greens and fairways are in tip top condition but the sand traps are in poor condition. What I found most annoying is, after leaving the green one cannot find the next tee. There are no pointers except fot 2 holes that do have a pointer.By the time I found someone to ask where the next tee is we could have been half way down the next fairway.Members pay an expensive yearly fee and visitors pay quite a lot so why don't the golf committee spend a few ££££ on pointers?

i have just played the spitfire course and did not think much of it at all as the course from my veiw is not well designed at all e.g. 14th play there and you will no what i mean

Played both courses on the first Monday of August, this was one of the hottest days of the year. I felt the Spitfire course much more interesting and easier to play. Although sometimes it was not obvious were we should be hiting our tee shots. The second hole was stroke index 13 but playing there for the first time was very difficult. This I feel should be one of the lower numbers. Greens looked like carpets but in fact played quite slow.

The Hurricane I did not enjoy, once you cross the road to play around 5 holes it looked quite barren and featureless, however said that I really enjoyed the 16th, this is a massive 600 yard plus par 5, which was very good.

Most of the par threes on both courses were very short, however I will certainly be returning, hopefully very soon.

Being a member at west malling golf club personally it find a challenging and interesting golf course.i feel it it far more difficult than most golf courses i have played myself. Having played the course a number of times and still find the hurricane a greater test of golf in comparison to the spitfire. My only groan is that the bunkers are in very poor condition and most tees take 5 minutes to find a flt place in which to hit your drive. Hard golf,intresting course, bad bunkers.

The Spitfire is a thinking golfers course, You can open your shoulders and hit long drives but it's not always a benefit, the greens are well protected and require you to play approach shots from the correct side of the fairway, the 14th can destroy a good card, I recommend taking a Iron and playing for position on many of the holes. The Hurricane is totally different course encompassing tight/open holes, the first six holes can destroy a card but if you do make it through to the 7th tee a few over, you have played well, but don't relax because you have the par 5 16th and par 4 18th both requiring a good drive and accurate approach shots. The pro-shop is well socked and with a great group of pro's who are always willing to advise, you will also find the club house welcoming.

West Malling has two interesting and very different courses.

The Spitfire, which I preferred is slightly tighter, hillier and has a bit more character

than the Hurricane course which is more open and allows you to open your shoulders a bit more.

My favourite hole on the Spitfire is 5th a long par 4 with a fairly large pond across

the front of the two tiered green. I played this with the wind in my face and even after

a decent drive was still left a shot of around 170 yards to the flag.

The best hole on the Hurricane is the 16th a very long slightly uphill par 5 which

measures over 600 yards from the back tees and is out of bounds tight on the left.

I would recommend both of the courese and think it is a very good venue if you are

planning a society day due to the different courses
