The Priors Golf Club Player Reports
Jason Butler (England) 23/10/06
I have played this course numerous times, and find it extremely good value for money £20 a round.
The staff are helpfull and friendly, but facilities are lacking, and that is due to Stapleford Abbots being across the road and Priors sharing.
The greens are always in good condition, and were better than many courses I played that cost twice as much this summer.
They are busy up until 12:30 Saturday and Sunday but the tee times are spread out enough not to allow the disaster of 5 1/2 hour rounds at Hainault just down the road.

I played The Priors on the 27th May, about 3 weeks after playing The Abbotts. I don't understand why there is such a big difference in the green fees. Maybe it's because there is no clubhouse. The course was in great condition both fairways and greens. It is shorter than The Abbotts but all that means is you have to hit a 3 wood straight, rather than a driver. I found that water hazzards made for a more interesting round. At £15 i'll save £21 and play this instead of The Abbotts.

I have played this course over three years, the price has now gone too high for the quality of the course. They have not got over the problem of tufts of grass on the edge of the greens which mostly ruins the majority of the approach shots. The greens today were awfull, they had just been "Tyned" and most of the mud was left on the greens. The course could be excellent but it seems they are just taking the money, they could put some more trees in which could make a vast change.

I played this course for the first time 2 weeks ago, i thought the standard of the course was superb. I payed 8 quid for the round and a buggy between two is 7.50. The course itself was well maintained and i thought was very playable. This course is perfect for somebody who can hit between 80 - 100. As mentioned before the water does make you think about several of your shots.

I play here a lot and love it, ok the portacabin clubhouse and no practice facilities drag it down, but it's cheap and you always get a friendly welcome. They've added a lot of drainage over the last 18 months which appears to have dried out the course a lot. As for the course, it's only a real challenge the first few times you play it. The 4 par 5s are very short, the (downhill) 11th and 15th are only a wedge after a good drive and the 1st and 13th are only a 6 iron after a good drive which makes a mockery of their par. The water which frightens the life out of you the first time you play here doesn't come into play once you get used to the course, except on the superb par 3 18th...125 yards to centre of green but there's water all the way from tee to green and OOB surrounding the green! I've had several rounds ruined by taking double bogeys (and worse!) on this hole. I'd definitely recommend Priors if you're a mid-high handicap but anybody playing off less than about 12 should be looking to go around in about 75 here.

PLus point is that it's fairly cheap. The course is not that difficult but does have a couple of interesting holes including a (sort of) island green. Road noise from the M25 is, indeed, a bit of an annoyance and the facilities are in a porta-cabin although, as said below, There are good facilities 30 seconds up the road at Stapleford Abbotts. 6/10
