Rother Valley Golf Centre Player Reports

I played at Rother Valley on Sunday afternoon and was looking forward to playing on a "private" course as I usually play on municipal courses in the area.
The condition of the course was a disgrace. Every lie I had on the fairway was muddy and the only time I got a decent lie was when I went in the rough. I appreciate that it can be difficult to keep the course in good condition at this time of the year but it is not as if we have had a prolonged period of rain, we have only had showers.

Having played Rother Valley about five times previous, I decided to take a group of 24 golfers to play this course for our captains away day.. Despite the torrential downpour we had for 7 hours continuously before tee off, the course was playable, bunkers were overflowing, but the greens were excellent, everyone of our group had to admit this was excellent value for money. The staff were brilliant. If you want value for money try Rother Valley.

Rother Valley Golf Course is situated next to Rother Valley Country park, not far from junction 31 from the M1, south of Sheffield. The centre consists of a driving range, a 9 hole par 3 course, and a putting green as well as the 18 hole course.
I have played numerous times at Rother Valley over the last 3 years, and despite it being difficult to play during the winter months due to the drainage problems-see previous reports, I can confidently say that the course at present is in its best shape ever. The greens are in excellent condition, the ball runs very well and most are very challenging indeed, especially the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, and 13th. The fringes surrounding the greens are lush and challenging to play off, even to the more competant chippers!
The holes provide a vast array of different challenges, each one very different to the next. Water is in play on many of the holes as well as challenging bunkers, dense woodlands, and some fairways are very difficult to hold. The ones that really stand out in my mind is the very difficult 3rd, a right uphill dogleg, the long downhill 6th, the par 3 island hole (7th), the 10th is has water to the left and trees to the right and a ditch that runs fully across the fairway.
The course is rather hilly, but when the peak of the course is reached (the 5th green), theres an excellent view of south sheffield and Rother Valley.
Overall the course is excellent value for money, and the staff their provide an excellent service. Great deals are available, including snacks, meals, drinks and buggies, see the Jack Barker webpage for details.
To say 10 years ago there was an open cast mine on the site of the course, it is doing pretty well indeed, and it can only get better.

Rother valley is one of the most interesting and aesthetically pleasing courses I have ever played and as such was looking forward to my round on Sunday 11th June. On arrival a sign greeted us saying preferred lies were in use strange we thought isn't this supposed to be the peak time of a courses condition. We soon found out why grass is some thing of a luxury on the fairways and those delicate little chip shots we dream about from just of the green were impossible as the vast majority of holes had nothing but baked mud surrounding them. The greens were not much better, it was near impossible to get a smooth role of the ball and we witnessed several putts that hit what only can be described as gouges which sent the ball off at 90 degrees. The course is in a very poor shape and is in need of some serious work which is a great shame as only a few years ago this was voted as one of the top 10 courses in its price range in the country. Oh those halcyon days!!! Come on Jack Barker get your hand in your pockets and sort it.

i played this course on sunday 29th december.while the greens were in exellent condition the fairways were so waterlogged i could hardly walk on them without slipping over.the course should not have been open in this state all it will do is ruin it for the upcoming months.and i was charged the full price!!i could only manage to play 10 holes as it was that bad.
