Enjoyed the course, luckily got the sun so the course was dry. All official Tees and greens in play.
Initial reaction was good friendly pro in the pro shop and warm welcome, only downside was no catering facilities open until 11am so had to make do with coffee from pro shop....avoid at all costs it was shocking!!
A nice tricky opening couple of holes and generally pleasing outward 9. Must be honest and say the inward 9 around 13/14/15/16 are a little bland and no defintion of fairway/semi, semi/rough. To finish a cracking 18th which is open to a risk if chasing a good score or safe option if protecting a lead.
Overall a nice course that given time with a little TLC can become very, very nice and at £21 for the day you can't grumble.
The lunchtime food was exceptional and at a reasonable price too.

Enjoyed the course, wet condition generally , quite boggy
off the faiway , all holes playing to the main greens.
A windy day the course played quite long a good test
of your swing approx 6400yds.
Apart from the 2nd hole which is through an alley of trees
quite a open course.

played this on saturday 27th october 2007 as a society group......we payed £37 for morning coffee with bacon sandwich 9 holes of golf, soup and sandwiches, then 18 holes folowed by a 3 course meal......all the food was excellent and well worth the money...the golf course was in ecellent condition and proved to be a real test of golf..theres lots of different types of holes with dog legs turning left and right if variety is what your after then you cant go wrong here.all the holes ask something different of your game the greens are not just flat pieces of land either they will test even the best of putters..i do know that a few years ago this course was in poor shape.but recent renovations on the course and clubhouse have turned it into a little gem and at £11 for a round (amazing value) you will be hard pressed not to be IM pressed...........the staff deserve a special mention also they were very helpful and friendly and made our day that little bit better than it was.........put it on your to play list even if you dont play great youll appreciate the challenge....oh and by the way modesty prevents me from telling you who birdied the last..ahem ahem............

Played for first time and what an absolute bargain. The course has obviously matured a lot since the the earlier comments and is now a real challenge with some great features. If your golf is poor then the wildlife to be viewed is fantastic. Now the bad bit. Most of the greens have severe slopes on them and for some strange reason the greenkeeper feels it OK to put the holes on the slopes which makes putting more like crazy golf.

Played today ( 29th April )with our society, 26 members attended. The course was in good condition and is a balanced challenge with long holes, well positioned water hazards and some dog legs requiring sound course management. The package is always good value and must recommend including the 3 course meal. The staff are very friendly and ensure things run smoothly from your arrival.
The course is developing well with tree planting programmes on the back 9 starting to recreate the woodland feel of the more mature front holes.
Well worth a visit, and as previous reports have noted, look out for the 90 deg dogleg left 2nd hole

Played last week in our Golf Society, and would describe our day as excellent value for money. Course was in reasonable condition for Spring. The facilities included Golf Buggies and excellent catering on the day. Pro Shop had nice selection.

Played it on 29/6/06 and is a fantastic course for £14 second hole is horrible a slight hook or slice and you`ve lost it i`m afraid but it does get easier until the you come to the two holes which require shots over the lake flat and easy on the legs would definatley go back downside is they only have a small shop not much choice my advice build one in the carpark.

WOW brilliant course. played on a bank holiday and only cost us £14. the course is in good condition appart from the greens are a bit bumpy (dew to spiking). the 2nd hole is very tight and you need to hit your ball 200yds+ to get good sight of the green. play this course you will not be disapointed or skint.COLIN.

Hi im a member of this club and would like to air my views on the course. Ive been playing here 8 years now, and how it has changed. It was very open up until a few years ago. All the silver birch that line the fairways were what we called ''the twigs''. Thats all they were. All the areas tree lined were blue staked so you could take a free drop out of them. That really helped! Now the twigs are trees!!!! If ya go in the trees you havent got much of a shot 90% of the time...you may get a good lie, but no swing area!!!! More is now happening on the back nine with added mounds and bunkers around greens. All that needs sorting is the yellow tee boxes...but give it time. Another 8 years this will be one hell of a demanding course...dare i say lower championship level!!!!!!
As for the daunting second.. well if ive played the course 200 times ive par'd it about 20 hehe! But if i can get through 1 and 2 just a shot over im happy... I tend to try to fade it down to the right so i have some shot to the green. A lot of people try aiming left of middle to hugg the left trees but if your short of the opening then your left with no shot and have to chip into a green attacking position!!
Great course this with more to come...go try it guys...cheap too!!!
Lee..

One of the chaps who's added comments on this page asked anybody who parred the 2nd hole to email him. My friend and I were hoping to send that email, but were stopped by respective scores of 6 & 7. I'd like to bet nobody else has sent him an email either. Allegedly, the hardest golf hole in the world is the road hole at St Andrews............ I think thats changed now and we are just waiting for the stats to catch up. The 2nd at Thornhurst is simply pure evil.
The course in general though is absolutely superb, and two feature holes on the front nine cross a lake with water clear enough to see the hundreds of golf balls left there by other similarly suffering golfers.
The greens seem to be very deceptive too. Putting has long been the strenght of my game but I found myself three putting on a few of the holes. A good test or a soul destroyer? You'll have to judge for yourselves.
We paid £14.00 for a bank holiday weekend in May, which was excellent value for a course of this quality. £12.00 gets you a buggy which we dont normally do, but which might have been an idea as it seems to be a peculiarly taxing walk for a relatively flat course.
All in all, we found this to be an excellent golf day and would highly recommend this course to anyone.

i have played this course qiute a few times but i still have the some complaints about it the back 9 is just plain boring most of the holes you just hit straight up and down .but fear not it finally looks like they may be hearing us golfers who say the sme there changing the 10th so there is hope yet but dont let me put you off this a goood course the front 9 are good but could maybe do with a few more bunkers to make it thet bit harder.

I played this course on a damp but not unpleasant day in november 2004. There were a few restictions in force on this occasion such as the teeing area,s were out of use and tee shots were played off mats. Tees had to be used on the fairways and the fantastically challenging par 4, 2nd hole was reduced to a par 3. However, this does not warrant criticism, as i regard this as sensible course management, trying to keep the fabric of the course in good shape for the summer months.
The front 9 is the most challenging. The par 5, 7th has a well concieled pond/lake. So concieled that you cannot see it until you reach it. The following par 3, 8th is played over the same water. Awesome! The par 4, 16th is a 280 yards par 4 dog leg to the right. Certainly drivable over the corner for the brave. You have got to get it right though otherwise it's oops! out of bounds. Reload.
Value for money. I will visit agin.

Played here for the First time today, First off let me say that the Course is Not in the Best Condition at this time of year, The Fairways and pathways were very Wet on the Plus Side the Greens were in Good Condition apart from were People Had`nt bothered to Repair pitch marks (you know who you are!) The Fairways are not cut too Short and are hard to find were the rough starts and the fairways begin. Now having said that I did enjoy playing here, The course layout is a very impressive one, The holes that feature water add greatly to the course appeal.. The course could do with some more bunkers as i rarely play a course and dont hit a single one.. as was the case today... Id Love to play this one in the summer and will No doubt head back here when weather conditions are more suitable..
Overall Id rate the experience as 8/10!
Jason Hobson (England) 29/10/04
What a course! On turning up me and my mate thought it was a private course as it looked dead posh. It is the best municipal course I have played. The course is a real tester and well worth £14 of anyones cash. Anybody wanting a well laid out and tricky course should play this one, well worth a look!
Gaz Fairclough (England) 10/07/04
"Hello MuM"..rite thats that sorted onto the the main reason am here-"THORNHIRST".
A "blinder" of a 1st hole -literally.If its a sunny day just shut your eyes and spank the ball as far as you can, because if you do open your eyes , you are blinded by the sun coming over the back of the green. The Second, look Ive played some holes in my time but this second hole is a nightmare, dog leg left in a valley of trees and there is no going over them either. If you do par it plaese e-mail me!After that, the course opens up lovely. Theres everything on this course you want-water-reachable par 4s(1 only)and proper par 5,s-500 yards+ every one.Its wll worth a check out £12.50 cheap at half the price.
Ken Lax (England) 08/09/03
I thought some of the dog-legs were a little too severe, especially the second but overall it was good value for money at £13.00.
kenneth cartwright (england) 09/06/03
the course can be quite a challenge if you struggle like i do with driving. the main concern i have with the course is the tee's are mis leading in that you are not square to the fairway, though the have recently built up some new teeing areas. the course will be very difficult when the staked tree rule is replaced. good value @£11 during week and £13 @weekend
winnie (uk) 02/06/03
After playing the course for the first time on Sunday I have to say how badly I rate the course, especially having heard good reports about it. I paid for a full 18 but ended up only playing the front 9. There was no definition between the fairways and the rough, as the fairways were very poor. The grass was far too long especially with the weather we have been having. To give the course some credit holes 2,7,8,9 are reasonable with water hazards taking thoughts away from bland surroundings for the rest of the round. 3/10
neil beech (england) 27/12/02
i have played this course quite a few times now,i must admit for a tenner i felt like i was robbing them.i am only a novice but found the course just right, not to easy not to hard.9/10
John (ENGLAND) 13/11/02
I try to play this course most weekends, an excellent course with some testing holes with the front nine being the best . The best hole is hole 2, avery narrow hole surrounded by trees you`ve got to be straight down side gets a litle boggy in winter
Ashley Young (England ) 26/03/02
From the moment you arrive at Thornhurst you get a great welcome ... the staff in the pro shop were really friendly and set the tone for a great day. The hospitality was equally good in the bar afterwards! They've invested heavily in a new drainage system for the course, and this has obviously helped a great deal. Fairways and greens were in great condition, although the course is fairly long so big straight hitting is generally required. The 2nd hole is a great feature ... the course will just get better and better as it matures. You can't fault it for a tenner!!
Barry P (britain ) 19/10/01
This course is good value for money for a full and long 18 hole course .Do not try this course if you are short of the tee for its over 6450 yds and has 4no long par fives and 2 no par 4s of over 430yds .The greens are good and true but about 30% to small on average making the many long approach shots a bit more difficult .A little plain but a good course .6/10
(britain ) 28/11/00
not a bad course for a tenner you need to be straight and long on most holes.7/10
(britain ) 28/11/00

s armstrong (britain ) 08/10/00
this course has improved in the last two years beyond all expectations, playing the course after a down pour I expected it to be flooded but the new drainage system in use seens to be working wonderfully.the greens were holding really well in summer due to the full irrigation system installed, all in all 10/10 keep it up.
a taylor (britain ) 17/01/00
vast improvement in the course since i played it a year ago
P JACKSON (britain ) 06/11/99
ALL THE FEATURE HOLES ARE ON THE FIRST 9 THE SECOND HOLE CAN DESTROY YOUR SCORE BEFORE YOU HAVE GOT INTO YOUR SWING.FAIRWAYS ARE VERY POOR. THERE IS ONLY A £1 REDUCTION FOR JUNIORS.
