Bondhay Golf Club Player Reports
Gordon Johnson (England) 21/04/08
It's interesting to see all the mixed reports for this course and the amount of reports shows how popular it is. This was confirmed when we arrived by the amount of cars in the car park, it was clearly a very busy course. I'm a society organiser and a high handicapper (28) and totaly agree with some of the comments as regard the water on the 18th. In general considering the time of year and the poor weather on the day I felt the course was in good condition. The greens looked terrible but were true and very testing. The course offers a good variety of holes notibly the 10th and 11th which others have mentioned. What I liked most about Bondhay was the relaxed casual atmosphere, friendly members and staff it's how clubs should be. The club was also flexible and didn't charge for one player who didn't show. On the negative side one of our members asked for some bread with his meal and was sold two slices on bread for 60p which I thought was very harsh considering the amount of money we had already spent. As is with most clubs in the winter and early spring I would like to come back and play in the Summer months. Overall our society had a great day on a challenging course and we'd definately come back

I am a member at Bondhay so play it regularly and to be honest I think the course suffers from too much tinkering from the owner who seems to be obsessed by making it as difficult as possible.
For example, his recent changes to the 18th are quite frankly a joke.
A par five which used to be a good risk reward hole has been ruined by adding more water near the green, so its now an automatic pitching wedge lay up for the 2nd shot. The hole has been totally ruined.
The bunkers are also frustrating at times, and the problem isn't the amount of bunkers (although there are a lot), its their positioning. The green side bunkers are so close to the green you only need to miss the green by 6 inches and you are in a bunker. Ive never played or seen a course where bunkers are so close to the greens on every hole (and i mean every hole)
Its also the same story with the new trees. They are literally inches from the fairway on most holes.
And finally the club house. Slightly below average compared to most private courses although the food is ok and decent value.
Having said all that the course is usually in good condition throughout the year so if you want to be frustrated for 4 hours then give it a go.

I played here for the first time on Sunday and, considering my normal dislike for newish courses, I was very pleasantly suprised.
In response to some of the comments below the course isn't the easiest but I managed an 85 which is more less my handicap. Yes, there are a lot of bunkers and yes, they are challenging because they're in the right places to present a challenge, but isn't that the point of bunkers? Aside from that there was enough landscaping and tree planting to ensure that the majority of the holes were fairly distinct and individual, but for £19.00 I wasn't complaining.
Overall, I liked the fact that the course started with a long tough par 4 and not a drive and a wedge. I enjoyed all the par 3s and the par 5s were of a good length. The water on the 10th and 11th made for some tough approach/tee shots - and I can easily understand why a high-handicapper would struggle here. Finally, the greens were in good condition and I would imagine would be seriously fast in dry weather.
The 9th and 18th are tough par 5s but on this occasion I think the severity and location of the water spoils the holes rather than enhances.
On the negative side what the hell is going on with the 'sand' in the bunkers? It wasn't sand it was some sort of industrial clay that made the bunkers resemble a building site. They've clearly spent money on the course, wouldn't buying proper sand (or even any sort of sand) have been a better investment than the money spent on making the tees look pretty?
Would definitely play again but if only they would sort out the bunkers!

Iv played bondhay many times and i must say its one of the best courses in the area. Unless you can afferd the steep prices of linderik or worksop. For £20 weekdays you cant beet it. Iv just been reeding the report put on in 27/5/06 and cant understand what hes moaning about? the bunkers are all well positioned and you will find the same on any good course. The greens and fairways are super and lush. And just to top it all off you have some beautifull water features. The 10th, 11th and 18th are my fav. Play this course and you will not be dissapointed.

As a former member, I find Bondhay a very very tough challenge. (I only left, becuse I forgot what it was like to score over 30 points!!)
It's only really geared up for handicappers off 12 and below. It's soul destroying for the rest of us!
Long, breezy and more sand than Blackpool beach, all adds up to a lot of blobs on the card. With all the bunkers which suround each green, you're expected to hit long, high & accurate approaches just to keep your score card ticking over!
The overall quality of the greens & fairways are terrific for a course of this age.
The clubhouse facilities on offer are especially good for groups.
May the force be with you!!

Played bondhay recently after hearing a lot of hype about the place.
I have to say i was quite dissapointed. Never have I seen or played on a course with as many bunkers. I know why it's so heavily bunkered too, it's an attempt to make an otherwise unchallenging immature course challenging. And it just does'nt work ( 34 stableford points on first attempt, I rest my case )
Over priced and over bunkered
Dont be surprised if the pro shop starts selling Callaway rakes.
