Surrey National Golf Club Player Reports
Mark Flynn (England) 10/09/07
A friend and I were looking for a course to join and took a look at Surrey National. On first play my impression was that it was too long too testing (and bloody tiring). Went away, played other courses (even joined one) but found that after a while the courses were becoming boring and predictable. Went back to the National, played again and absolutely loved it. We found the course could be played in so many different ways with so many gambles to take (if you have the nerve). Yes it can be tough but the front 9 and back 9 feel completely different to each other and keep you on your toes. I am now a member and play weekly and still find the course fun and challenging. I regularly take guests ranging from 13-28 handicappers and have never a bad word from anyone. Definitely one of the best in the area.

Really enjoyed my round of golf here. Despite a torrential rainstorm that covered the greens, 10 minutes later you wouldn't even have known it had rained. A good variety of holes which are all challenging. Yes its a good walk, but isn't that part of what golfs about. Very impressed with all aspects and will definitely come back to play here.

Played here midweek November 06 ( £15 using a county card ).
Modern parkland course with holes running along the slopes of a valley.
Initial impressions weren't that encouraging upon arrival or after playing the first 2 holes. Then the course picked up as the holes improved & it became apparent that the course had been well designed (particularly around the greens & also considering the general slopey lie of the land) .Three's a nice par 3 with water & the fifth an enjoyable par 5 also using the same lake. The course continued in an enjoyable manner until i reached the par 5 14th .From this point on the course started to feel long & tiring. There's only 1 par 3 on this 9 & it didn't flow as well as the front 9 (although we were held up for most of the front 9 by 2 ignorant members until we had to ask to come through) .
The last 4 holes are par 4 's & the 16th green is right next to the car park where some people probably finish as the 17th (which would be better as the 1st hole) sends you back out again just when you don't need it.
Added to this there's an untimely long steep walk up to the 18th tee & the 18th hole with it's water carry to the green is spoiled by being about 50 yards too long thus discouraging people to 'go for it'.
There's yet another steep slope to negotiate from the last green back to the car park & by this stage i'd had enough.
Although there has been mainly good design & variety of the holes ,the par 3's were shortish which i think is good, the undulating greens were interesting & fine to putt on & the course conditioning was decent, the overall tiring nature of the terrain means once was enough for me .

Nice course. Generally a massive challenge for a mid to low handicapper.
3 holes that stand out
First par 5 which has a second shot almost entirely over water.
Par 4 that has a giant tree guarding the approach to the green
18th that has on open drive, followed by an approach to a green guarded closely by a lake.
All in all an above average course which is excellent value on 2-4-1

I played this course for the first time today on a 2-4-1 for £15 and in all honesty you could pay a tenner more and not feel cheated.
You can happily take your driver out with you on this course and have a great time without fear of losing umpteen balls. It is extremely forgiving off the tee. Most of the fairway bunkers were positioned too short to be punishing. The greens however are a totally different proposition. They are well bunkered and the slightest error will be punished. The three par threes were an absolute treat and the 18th is a great finishing hole.Every single fairway was in immaculate condition and the greens were ok but not great. Clubhouse is a very smart building with a terrific terrace overlooking the final hole. Also, not as hard walking as some of the previous entries may have suggested. All in all it's a fun round, not the hardest, but great fun nevertheless and i have no doubt i will be back many times.

I loved this course. We were lucky that one of the members there came along to show us the way round, and he had every right to be proud of the place.
It ain't easy, and it helped that we had someone to show us the right lines to take. Sometimes we even took them!!
I played it in the summer and everything about the course was good. The Greens and fairways were a pleasure, and the clubhouse facilities were excellent too.
Playing it midweek on a 2-fore-1 I actually felt like I was stealing from them, it's such good value.
However, don't take my word for it, just go play it!
