Studley Wood Golf Club Player Reports

I read with interest the remarks on Studley Wood’s website by Paul Mahoney (at the time writing for Fore! magazine but now writing for Golf World) that it had the feel of “a wannabe European Tour venue.” Judging from the excellent practice facilities, I can understand his opinion. Judging from the course, I’m afraid I can’t.
It was a shame that the greens had recently been cored because, overall, the course wasn’t in bad condition. By and large, though, there’s still no getting away from the open parkland feel that characterises so many new layouts. The ancient woodland comes into play on half a dozen or so of the holes, but Studley Wood is still very much a parkland course. Not that there’s anything intrinsically wrong with that – but, in this case, all the hallmarks of yet another facile American-style parkland experience are evident: large, non-punitive fairway bunkers, the obligatory water hazards, overly-accommodating fairways and so on. You know the story. (see also my reports for Erlestoke Sands, Merrist Wood and Traditions – courses with some similarities to Studley Wood).
That said, there are some tighter holes (Par 4s at 3 and 12 in particular) where the wood really comes into play and the par 3s are good fun, if a little too similar to each other. Credit also to the husband and wife team that have obviously worked extremely hard to establish Studely Wood – and a pleasantly congenial atmosphere.
My advice, though, is don’t believe the hype and, I’m afraid, if push comes to shove then the prices charged here (£30 for a weekend twilight round) mean definitely go elsewhere to get better value for your money.

Played in early July and was rewarded by good wheather to go with the fantastic course. USA style greens with large bunkers were some of the best and hardest I've played. Large fairways were protected on nearly every hole by water, sand and trees. You came off the course thinking that was an easy course 'so why didn't I score better?'. Strongly recommended to golfers of all abilities.
