Myself and three friends played here yesterday afternoon and had an enjoyable game.

£10.00 each for twilight at 12.45 was a good deal.

The greens were in pretty good condition considering the time of year and that it's a pay and play course.

We're all high handicappers and the course is forgiving enough to allow us all to par at least one hole!

It wasn't particularly busy either and we rarely had to wait to play a shot.

Only critisism is that some of the tee positions meant that you couldn't stand on level ground to hit the drive. Grounds staff, please place the tee pegs with a little more consideration as there are undamaged flat areas on all tees!

I've played this course a few times now, and it has been enjoyable most times. My regular four-ball consists of one 16-ish handicapper, two 20ish, and a 'soon to break 100', and the course offers enough challenge and leeway to suit all of us.

The greens and fairways are generally pretty well kept for a 'p&p' course, but there is a lack of signage which lets it down a little on the first visit. Some of the holes, particularly on the front 9, are a little cramped, but the back 9 opens out and is a genuine pleasure to play.

Good for 16+ players, but if you're better than that there are better options in the vicinity.

All in all an enjoyable experience (except for some stupid short putt misses but the less said about that the better).

£14 for 18 holes is decent value and 100 balls on the range for a fiver isn't too bad.

Quite a hilly course, particularly the front nine which has some big undulation changes. Only bad thing about the layout is that it seems a couple of holes are particularly squashed in where they were running out of space (such as the 230 yard 8th).

Good range of par 4 lengths and the course was in decent condition, with greens running fast and smooth. The facilities aren't great but satisfactory enough.

At one point there was a security van chasing kids around the course which wasn't pleasant, but I managed to make it round on my own in only 3 hours despite not being the fastest of players.

Good challenging course where, with the front 9 you are either playing up or down hill (quite steeply); the back 9 is quite open. I feel there are pros and cons to this course and I have listed them below. In summary: though a challenging course, if it wasn’t for the fact that it is very close to where I live, I do not think I would travel any distance to play Ruxley Park.

Pros:

*/ Front and back 9’s are very different. This makes for an interesting game.

*/ Orpington Golf Centre has 2 full 18 hole courses; Ruxley Park being one, Cray Valley being the other. There is also a 9 hole course which I have not played.

*/ You can often pay & play this course. Otherwise you can usually get a decent teeing off time at very short notice.

*/ Large fleet of buggies for those who require transport.

*/ Large car park by the clubhouse. (The 3rd tee would benefit being screened/netted from the car park in some way. I have witnessed at least 2 cars receive dents from wayward balls)

*/ Half-way house by the 9th green if you need a break.

*/ Free practice putting green.

*/ Golf Range on site.

*/ Good number of waste bins by the teeing areas and I’ve never seen one too full to use.

*/ Good sized pro shop.

Cons:

*/ It is often hard to distinguish the difference between the rough and the fairway. The rough grass is quite short and the fairway grass is quite long. Good for those who have trouble keeping it on the short grass, bad for those trying to find the short grass for maximum roll.

*/ Very few bunkers have rakes.

*/ The course needs the staff to patrol once-in-a-while to make sure all players have paid their green fees (random ticket inspections), i.e. you can be playing with nobody in front of you, then all of a sudden you have people appear out of the woods with a couple of clubs under their arm hacking around in front of you.

*/ Also the course needs the staff to patrol once-in-a-while to make sure all players who having hired buggies do not drive them recklessly. I have witnessed numerous buggies parked on the teeing grounds; evidence of ‘doughnuts’ on fairways and on the 18th green ripped turf where a buggy had been driven across the green!

*/ 15th green seems to suffering badly from the grass problem I think is called ‘fairy rings’. I’m not an expert but I believe this can be cured by replacing the turf. Otherwise we players are left with numerous bare circular patches to putt over.

*/ For lady players, be aware the 2nd and 13th Red tees are further back than the gent’s Yellow tees.

*/ Need better tee markings for the 13th and 17th tees. The two 13th teeing areas straddle the 17th tee; confusing for some people. Essentially you have three teeing areas in a row and only one tee marker, but no indication of which tee that marker is for.

*/ Many of the ball washer devices are missing water.

*/ Need better player ‘all clear’ bells and signage on some blind holes. You are left with a situation of not being able to rely on the players in front ringing a bell and then you have to either walk forward to see if the way is clear (remember, a very hilly front 9) or take your chances and play blind hoping for the best.

*/ Need to promote players repairing their pitch-marks on the green. Again the course would benefit from staff being out on the course.

*/ Have been plagued by the “wanna buy some golf balls mister” merchants. Though I had not seen them the last 2 times I’ve played. Again, these chaps/kids have an iron under their arm whilst they search the course for balls and you can make your own mind up whether they have paid their green fees.

But don’t be put off, play it at least once to make your own mind up (I may be over critical, but these are my opinions).

Played here for the first time. It was very enjoyable, despite being confused about the yardage and the scorecard, only to find out these were from the neighbouring course! Looking forward to returning soon. Well worth the green fee.
