We spent 4 great days at the hotel and played this challenging links in the most benign conditions last Saturday. It was a joy from start to finish in lovely sunny and windless weather, except for losing heavily to a bandit playing out of his skin. The finishing 4 holes are particularly memorable, but there are few weak holes and the condition of the course was excellent for the time of year. All the staff we met were friendly and welcoming. We paid a hotel residents rate of 65 euros, which I think is reasonable, but I'm not sure what non-residents would pay. They also told me that they accept 2 fore 1 vouchers on Tuesdays only, so don't bank on using them at other times. Best idea is to find yourself a great value 3 night deal at the hotel, which is very comfortable, using one of the internet booking sites and combine this course with one or more of the other great links in the neighbourhood. Nearby Malahide is a lovely town and Dublin is 30 minutes away on the bus. We'll be back I'm sure.

Just got back from this course over thw weekend. It is one of the toughest courses I have ever played. Wind is always "in play" as a previous reviewer mentioned. But such is the characteristic of a links lcourse. Coming from Parkland type environment I felt it very challenging. You are never certain what club to take out. Most of the time I was playing knock down shots into or across wind.

The course is also always well maintained and drains very very well. Had 4 rounds there and had to stop on day 3 due to the heavy rain and wind. Bring your waterproofs as its not pleasant when its wet.

Point to note that all distances are in metres. So its actually longer than you might think.

Absolutely fabulous course. Challenging, intelligent and well kept. Winter rates represent very good value. Already looking forward to flying over to playing it again.

QUITE SIMPLY THE BEST LINKS IN THE WORLD. IT RATES ALONGSIDE BALLYBUNION AND THERE IS NO HIGHER PRAISE I CAN GIVE A COURSE.

Played the Port last June, a couple of weeks before the tall grass died down. So, watch-out for the typically Irish guide markers on the course. You can hit what you think is a perfect drive and never find your ball in the deep stuff! Don't worry if you can't seem to get a time here - many tee times are block-booked by agencies and the like - be persistent since times open-up close to the day. P-marnock is in demand and they know it - it is not one of the cheapest courses you'll ever play. It is a beauty without a doubt and like many links courses looks a lot easier than it is. Beautifully maintained (in spite of the coachfuls of tours constantly pulling up). If you want to avoid the mobs, consider playing later in the day when there is plenty of light and the course is practically all yours.

Portmarnock is simply one of the greatest courses anyone could hope to play. If someone said it was THE greatest, I would not argue. At 7147 yards from the plates, or even 6800 from where we played it, the course represents everything a golfer can ask of a course and then some. The course has water on three sides, yet one does not need a ball retreiver at any stage. The wind is constantly 'in play', which is one thing all courses need, and so are the irritating bunkers, always lurking in the exact place you don't want them to be. The 15th is often rated the best par three in the world, and it surely must be, at 187 yards. Describing it would not to justice - it's perfect when you see it. The 4th and 12th are also holes of perfection, among many great ones. Go play it and so for yourself!
