I was amazed that this will be the first review of this magnificent and challenging course. I even doubted if I would log this report as it is literally a hidden gem and should remain so! Driving up from Clonmel into the hills makes you wonder where it would be suitable to lay out a golf course. And then suddenly you turn left for Clonmel Golf Club.
It is truly a wonderful golfcourse although a tough walk for many. However, the course is a challenge and the scenery is stunning. I remember the two hilly par 5's on the front nine, the views from the 6th tee box and the excellent 9th (par three). Then Clonmel has its own version of Amen Corner. The long 13th will challenge anyone. Next up the spectacular par 3 14th where you have to hit a green from an elevated tee. Missing the green will almost make it impossible to score par. The next hole is a par 4 where you drive over a valley (unplayable lie) to a severly sloping fairway. The closing holes are somewhat easier but by no means easy.
Afterwards the friendly members apologised for the state of the greens. They should have been better and quicker, as they said. Which would mean that staying on them and putting on them would also be more challenging. We were just glad we played them as the were, because some of the greens have a severe slope and will test your game even more. We just took a Guinness, looked at each other and knew we just played a truly magnificent course.
Best of all, we played it for €20 as part of the Suir Valley Golf Experience.
