Monty may not have won an major but he knows how to build a major test of golf. When you drive through the course it looks uninspiring, unexpected for the land and other courses in the area. However, on every tee you stand on from 1-18 you know your playing an awesome course. You have 2 choices take a driver and hope to drive the myriad of bunkers guarding the fairway or lay up and take on a long iron to a green proteced by as many bunkers which are even deeper. The greens are razor sharp and true. All holes will test your golf and a true links test without the sea in sight. 17th is a real gem. Par 3 downhill. Lake ia the back drop with the stunning Carton House in the background. Not as expensive a some other better known courses in the area.So play play it now while its cheap and the rough hasn't grown up yet.

Played the Monty last week (05-07-06) having played the Palmer Course at the K-Club 6 weeks ago - this course fantastically well manicured but is hell for the high handicapper - Pot bunkers and loads of them strategically placed and rough that you would lose a football in never mind a golf ball - combine these with tight fairways, an open track - 'inland links' as described locally - and fast undulating greens and it is one hell of a course. A true test designed to tell us wishful thinkers what our true skill levels are.
Play the O'Meara if you are over 10 - it's a great course also - if you're a masochist or want to inflict pain on your friends - play the Monty - should be hosting the Ryder Cup

Played both the O'Meara and the Montgomery on the same day, the former is a parkland layout with some really nice holes and in good condition allowing me to get round in level par.As a result was looking forward to an afternoon on the Montgomery, which is an inland links and in fine condition. Well, I was brought back down to earth by the sternest test of golf you can imagine. At the time I thought my day had been ruined by an unfair test of golf, but,on reflection, I had played a course which can only be described as a monster. If you think you are in good form, play this track and be humbled. This is not a course to be taken lightly and tests every aspect of the game. BRILLIANT. Carton House is magnificent with friendly staff and excellent facilities. Fly to Dublin and play this. It can be done in a day from the UK.
