Old Head Golf Links Player Reports

£120 is excessive, though the scenery is breathtaking. When we played the wind was blowing a heavy gale which made it a very tough course, often aiming shots out to sea 45 degrees wide of the green so the wind could bring the ball back! We took a caddie who proved invaluable. Biggest gripe with the course however is that it took us almost 7 hours to complete the round due to every match in front of us being made up to 4 balls. We were both bored with the whole episode after 5 hours but felt obliged to finish due to the cost. Overall a wonderful course to look at, but too expensive and the speed of play needs a lot of work.

I played Old Head in April of 2000. It is a wonderful setting, but the course is not that hard. At 120 Irish Punts it is no bargain. We literally got lost on the course, no direction markers to the next tee, and the scorecard was no help. When they get a strokesaver it will help. This is a course I would recommend to play once to see the views, but in my opinion it is not worth the money or the hassle to get there (it is a long drive from Shannon Airport)

one hundred and twenty pounds! This is what I didn't read in any of the brochures. I've played better courses for one third the price. It didn't play like a links at all and it's condition didn't warrant the price either. In pretty average form and off the second from back tees played the back side in 38 so not difficult enough.

Took on the Jevons brothers on this tough links. Really a spectacular course and one that you have to have length of the tee and finesse around the greens. With the wind blowing a force 7 the Jevons hook made the fairways a distant prospect - having taken a four hole lead at the turn, we nailed three on the hop to win seven and six. You've got to be thinking that they have to go back to pro school to start again. (Won four of the last six playing A game golf and seeing a lot of red!)

After 3 separate trips to Scotland, I thought I had seen and played the most spectacular courses in the world. This course however takes the cake! Absolutely the most breathtaking views ever. I cannot wait to return. As for the golf course, it's very challenging but fair. The 12th is especially difficult and from the tee reminiscent of the 9th "Bruces Castle" at Turnberry. Don't miss this course, it will be world famous in the not so distant future.
