Read a lot of positive comments on Troia before heading there in March. And to be honest it was even better than I expected. A challenge in it self, the course has unique surroundings. And of course being so close to the ocean the wind is always a factor. Best of all is that besides being a challenge to play, it is not a challenge to walk. No great distances between holes and balls are usually easy to find because the sand makes sure it stops where it lands.

But can someone please explain why this course is so quiet, while the other courses in the area are crowded. Forduring our round we saw just 6 people playing, and that was including the two of us!!!!!!

To define Troia as "Links" suggests relatively flat or undulating sandy turf-covered ground usually along a seashore. Troia however is so much more. Taper the fairways with umbrella pine trees to distort the perception of distance. Replace the rough with sand and pine straw and scrub brush. Introduce small, angled greens, and an abundance of varying sized bunkers hidden at eye level. Then bend the tight fairways at around 200 yards off the yellows and protect the knuckle of the corner with strategically placed overhanging pines. Finally sprinkle with sunshine and breeze and you've got Troia. How do you play it? With respect! Plan 2 hours to get there from Cascias, and a little more if the Lisbon footy is on for the return. Clubhouse is modern and in keeping with the environment, and the staff are brill. Conclusion : RTJ Snr had fun making this one.

The course was marvellous. I will be playing there again next year. The first tee is one of the most challenging I have ever played.

Stay on the fairway and you will have a great game - play defensive out of the rough - the sand is softer than the bunkers.

The course was good enough for Gary Lineker and Alan Hansen, they were there last time I played.

Fancy a challenge ? This is for you.

A true links course that is tough. Very tough.

In superb condition with small greens, small fairways and huge areas of sand.

Having played on a hot, still day it was considerate of the staff to cool us down by switching on the sprinklers whilst we were playing!!

Allow a 2 hour journey if staying in the Lisbon / Estoril / Cascais area and be grateful you don't have to play your monthly medal there. (Just have a look at the white tee on the first - could be the quickest NR in history)

Probably the toughest course I've ever played,and that was on a still day!Every green is small,and most are surrounded by 3-4 bunkers.Pretty tight fairways,mostly with sand borders,so you need to be good out of sand.Really very very good.

This is truly an excellent course with an wonderful variety of holes. The journey to the course via the Setubal ferry is great fun and the effort of getting there is well rewarded. This has to be one of the best value venues anywhere as the green fees are very reasonable and the course not overplayed. Beware though, off the back tees this couse may not be a pleasure to everyone as it is seriously demanding and does not flatter your golf. If your playing Medal you could run out of balls on the first tee.

Definately worth the effort for the conniseur.

Wow, what a course. As courses go Troia makes Vilamoura Old Course and QDL appear easy. We all know this isn't the case, But Troia is superb. A blend of sand, umbrella pines, small greens and tight fairways. A magical course from the back tees where it makes you realise how good professional golfers must be. Next time I will play off the yellow course and be delighted to shoot anywhere near my handicap (7). Another point to note is this course is a bargain at only @£25. Also after your round have a look at the handicap list for the members, then appreciate how good these people must be. I bet that a 12 handicap at Troia is a solid 7 at most Englisg courses. A must play...but beware the white tees!!!!

One of the best tests of links golf you will play anywhere in Europe. Superb greens and tight sand bordered fairways. A "do not miss" course, if you get the opportunity to play whilst in Portugal.

I thought this course would be tough and it was. Anything off the fairway left you with a shot out of powder sand.

Greens in excellent condition, but small and difficult to read.

If you are in the area, make the effort to play this course.
