Oceanico Pinhal Golf Course Player Reports

Have played Pinhal in may for the last 2 years and, although it is not the best in the area and the comments on the slight lacking course maintainance are true, I feel that it is a very good layout and a very tough test. Tree lined near all the way and with generally smaller greens that the other courses in the area, it requires a lot of thinking and accurate execution to get round in a decent score. Club house is one of the best in the area and club cleaning service (10 euro i think) was a nice touch. Not playing it this year on our trip and i'm quite disapointed.

played Pinhal last week it was the 1st course of four oceanico courses we were playing during our weeks stay, although some decent holes a lot of our party were a little bit disappointed, maybe our expectation was to high on our 1st visit to portugal,as someone already said if Pinhal is included in a package deal play it first, out of 15 of 16 players in our party this was the weakest course we played during our stay.

When you’re not working, you’ve got the sun on your back, your tummy is full of Madeira cake and you’ve got your shorts on, then it’s difficult to write any bad comments about a golf course. However, in my own personal opinion and after many years of playing all courses here, Pinhal is the poorest course in the area. The course is at its best condition from November to April so anyone playing outside these months may not be impressed. The sheer weight of tourist golfing traffic, especially too many with high handicaps, has taken its toll on this tree line course that meanders through the villa estate. It’s not a bad course but there’s better outside the area that the Dutch, German and British golfing parties have not trampled and hacked. If you are playing Pinhal for the first time then its name may give away the key to shooting low here, and that’s stay away from the umbrella pines. The opening par 5 1st needs two straight shots and the par 4 2nd has a tree to carry for your approach. There’s a couple of tricky par 3’s, acute dog-leg holes and some blind tee shots. Pinhal does have it’s share of nice wild-life whilst walking around, in particular nearly every hole has Hoopoe’s, Bee-eaters and Rollers. It a challenging test of a overall nicely laid out 18 holes but the course could now do with some TLC maintenance.

Played Pinhal, Laguna and the Millenium in Setember this year, for me Pinhal was definitely the best. Nice layout, lovely clubhouse, a great course!

16 of us had a thoroghly enjoyable round. took us about 5 hours which we didn't think too bad, quicker than the last reviewer although they asked for handicap certs so that might be why. tree lined fairways and good quality greens. buggies quite dear at 50 euro's.

Thought the course was in pretty good condition and enjoyed the layout. We started at 1.30pm and had only played the 14th by 6.00pm when we had to leave for the airport. The general standard of the other golfers was incredibly poor - no request for handicap certificates at all and most players showed no etiquette regarding playing through. I was later advised that the earlier you can tee off the better otherwise it could take up to 6 hours to get round...

Played Pinhal twice last week and can only say that 80% of the Fairways on the course were awful. We also played Vila Sol which did not have the same problem so I can only assume it is lack of maintenance. Apart from that, the course layout was great with plenty of trees either side of the Fairways which were generously wide on some holes but required course management on other holes. The Greens were in great condition as were the bunkers. The Clubhouse was nice. Save your money until they have sorted the Fairways out.

Our Society (14 of us) visited late June 2001. Undoubtedly the 2nd best course in Vilamoura, pity about the on-going maintenance work ( although this only affected 3 holes at the time, the starter informed us that the back 9 will shortly all be revamped).

The course is a true test of golf for all standards, club selection and ball placement being paramount in avoiding the myriad of trees.

Greens perhaps a little to slow for our liking, but that's just nitpicking.

Well recommended.

Played in March 01. Green Fee about £32inc local hotel discount. Nice course, nice surroundings and some water hazards. Some difficulty in making par 4 greens in 2 shots and if your off fairway by a yard there is usually atree between you and the green. Although I'm usually a stranger to sand, I made 7 shots out of bunkers during my round. Overall a very enjoyable round with pleasant new aquaintances. Vilamoura with its 5 courses within a couple of miles is ideal fo a golf holiday, weather permitting.

Aug 2000. A nice course, but currently limited to only 9 holes. A lot of work seemingly ongoing on and around course i.e. new clubhouse, large areas of GUR

Excellent course, lush green fairways and well kept greens. Course is quite long, it will take even the experienced player around 3 hours to get round. It is one of the most popular golf courses around the area so booking is recommended, especially in the high season. Club and cart hire is available, typical price is around £15 for each. Discounts are available for play after 4pm at night or if you stay in the area. The long, long 14th is a testing hole - all uphill. Water hazards play their part in around 5 holes, so watch for the turtles! Course fees are around £15-£20, depending when you play. Excellent VFM, recommended!
