I am a member of Dougalston golf club and would just like to say that if you haven't visited this club in a while then you will notice some excellent changes,ie drainage the 2nd and 12th fairways esp no extra water hazzards there now,the greens are some of the best in our area but the main difference is the rough the 9th&10th have been cleared slightly and the rodies(I ain't even going to try and spell them HaHa) off to the right the 10th fairway have been mostly removed there is still rough but you can now at least find the ball(you should still have a few spares just in case) on I would say 2 of the hardest holes on the course which has been a good respite for us.At weekends now Esporta have added staffing for a period in the golfers bar for food and drink.

The layout is quite simply one of the best in the area, with stunning scenic views, while the course has got the reputation as one of the toughest in the Glasgow area. Whilst I agree it is probably one of the most challenging course I've played, it does offer the chance of pars and birdies if you hit the ball straight and keep it on the fairway.

Golfers who are erratic off the tee will struggle round here as you will inevitably be playing 3 off the tee or your 2nd shot may be from undulating rough, sand, behind a tree or even a penalty drop shot.

The course has a good variety of holes and has certainly benefited from all the drainage installation and irrigation work, as both the fairways and greens are in excellent conditions. Most of the fairways are narrow and tree-lined and nearly every one of them has some sort of hazard waiting for a wayward shot. There is numerous water hazards, ranging from small burns infront of the greens to large ponds that you need to avoid to make shots into the greens. The greens themselves are in an immaculate condition, some can be quicker than others, but all have a good covering of grass which helps hold the ball well.

Memorable holes include the 1st where you play across water. You can be brave & go for the green off the tee but most lay up on the fairway to try & secure an opening par.

The 7th is all about your tee shot as if you are anywhere right of centre then you will not be able to reach the green in regulation. That said, even if you have a shot to the green, you will have to negotiate the pond to the right and the burn at the front of the green as well as two large bunkers. A par here will definitely seem like a good score.

The 10th is aptly named "Nae Chance" as you are hitting uphill to a narrow fairway, so if you could only have one straight drive during the round, then you would want it to be here. After the ridge, everything runs to the left, so even a good drive could end up running into trouble as there are trees to both the left and right. Only a drive finishing up in the middle or left of the fairway will give you a chance to go for the green, which is long and narrow, so probably best aiming for the mound at the left hand side and getting a run onto the green.

The 11th is a par 3 and is perhaps the signature hole of the course, playing from an elevated tee you are hitting 190 yards (sometimes longer if the wind is blowing) to a green guarded by water to the left and the front.

Lastly, the 17th has to be one of the most terrifying closing holes I have ever played. From an elevated tee, you have to carry about 200 yards to the fairway which is only about 25 yards wide and has trees and ditches at either side. Your second shot is then to an elevated green so you need to make sure you have enough club or the ball will just run back down the hill. This hole has the potential to be a real card wrecker.

All the par 5's on the course are definite birdie opportunities, in my opinion, and a bogey on them can end up feeling like a double.

To sum up, this course has everything that a golf course should. It will challenge you, tempt you, reward you and at the same time punish you should you hit wayward shots. If you want to test your golfing ability then this course will certainly provide an ample challenge for you.

The only downside to this unique course is the club facilities. The locker room, well there isn't one, just a small changing area which must be a nightmare when club events are on. Also, no bar staff in the golfers bar, you need to go upstairs to the main Health Club bar/restaurant if you want to eat or have a drink. It just doesn't feel like a golf clubhouse and from speaking to some of the members, these have been ongoing problems since Esporta took over the running of the course.

Well worth a visit!!

This course is very beautiful well run and well kept (although some of the water hazzards were a bit smelly on the day I played) However, its a TOTAL pig if you can't hit your ball anything other than straight down the middle.

Tree lined parklands at its best and most attractive, but seriously be warned, the SI 1 hole (10th) is called "Nae Chance" - nearly every hole could be called that. Very punishing for even the slightest of wayward shots on the greater proportion of holes. I lost at least a dozen balls. My faves were the 2nd and 3rd, probably because they were my only pars of the day - thereafter disaster on a humiliating scale (apart from the 7th, but its very open - or "normal "as some may say!).

Don't be too put off though as its a lovely course really and well worth a visit. I'm giving it a lower value for money rating as I reckon I spent more in balls than the round cost me.

just joined the club again after being away for a few years.course has changed a bit for the good (and the bad).still the toughest track i have played,and the best. anyone who really wants to test their game should play.i can guarantee you its not your drive and flick course.i am a 6 handicapper and every club in the bag comes out.superb.

All the work on this course is now completed,with 3new tees and fairways, the new fairways are setling in as are the greens,(there are only 3 new greens 5years old),the rest are the previous greens, the course was built in 1972,as I say all the greens are first class.A lot of work has been done on drainage and seems to be succesfull,From the Medal tees you have a par 70,SSS 71,Lengh 6120,they have already held a very succesfull scratch & handicap Open, On 22nd July there holding a senior's open.I hope golfers will come and enjoy the new layout and excelent facilities at Esporta.

I have just played this course and would have a simple peice of advice at present ie 'dont bother'. The reason is the temp tees which I assumed would be the man made tees placed near the normal tee postions .On this course however it turned out to be a blue litter bin placed 140yds from the hole on the seventh when the main tee is over 200 yds further back .It was the same on the 8th the 10th the 11th was very short the 6th had a temp green halfway up the fairway etc. Only about half the course was playing to around its normal length and with some of back holes, straight forward par 5's turned into 430 yd par 4's with no guidance on shot direction over blind brows .

The most dissapoiniting factor in all this is that the couse is an interesting one starting with a good varity of holes ranging from the very narrow to the wide open on the back part of the course. Most of this is tree lined and in addtion the greens were some the best I have played this year .

However wait untill the full course is in use .

This course provides one of the best layouts in Glasgow and the surrounding areas. The water hazards are excellent and provide a good test of golf. The greens are usually very good but because of the Scottish weather, it is sometimes difficult to maintain them.

Overall a very interesting course and a good and fair challenge.

The course has been extensively revised over the last few months, and officially re-opened on 21st July. The course is as difficult as ever! Four new holes have been added, which still need time to grow and settle, so too the greens but they have got a lot better over the summer. This will be a stunning course when it has matured, and well worth a game in the meantime. 1st hole, tee off over a lake. 4th hole, water beside the green. Some excellent par fours (6,8,9,11 & 17 all notable.) The course is tree-lined and as tight as people say, but not as long as it feels!

This is the hardest course i've played. With most of the fairways narrow and tree-lined with many hazards just waiting for your stray teeshot...so take plenty of balls. The only problem is the walk between some of the holes which are quite long. But overall a great days golf.

Dougalston is one of the harder courses in central Scotland and certainly punishes those who stray off it's tree-lined fairways. Picturesque holes and a fair amount of water can sometimes be spoiled by poor greens, but definitely a unique experience
