Downfield Golf Club Player Reports
'Young P' (England) 27/08/07
Day 3 of Scotland 2007 after opening at Forfar and then Carnoustie Buddon & Burnside.
Downfield has just scraped into Golf World's last Top 100 courses in Britain and Ireland – and while it's a decent enough track, I can think of various other courses that are more deserving of such a lofty position.
We virtually all agreed that, whilst this is clearly a nice course, there's something that it lacks.
Maybe it's that, despite its treelined nature, it somehow still feels more parkland than woodland. Or that the sounds of the city (adjacent Dundee) are often still clearly audible.
But for me it's the soft ending, with virtually all the last five holes realistic birdie opportunities (as Young P proved by going on a birdie blitz in the afternoon round.)
Despite that, the welcome was warm enough and there are some good holes, notably the long par 4 7th and 11th.
It certainly also wins the competition for best-named hole of the week – 'Kidney Punch' being the (surely inappropriate?) name for the short, innocent par 3 17th (we inflicted the real thing on the Bristol Monkey).
Couldn't help thinking that it seemed a slightly odd place to use for Local Final Qualifying for the Open.
Even stranger, I read elsewhere that Gary Player regards the par 3 12th as one of the best par 3s in the world! Bizarre.
Next up: Gleneagles King's.

Just finished my first 18 holes on what can only be described as SPECTACULAR !!!
Pristine springs to mind and apart from PGA tour you will not find truer greens anywhere- a special thanks and credit to the Greenkeeping Staff. WELL DONE.

This course was recommended to me years ago by a Scottish pal of mine. I finally got to play it this year and it was a real joy. A beautiful parkland course in pristine condition and true greens. A great deal of variety plus the clubhouse and staff were excellent. The food too was great value. I highly recommend this course, it is wonderful.

Played this course on the 13th June 2006 along with 6 friends and found it to be in great condition, providing a really great days golf.
Excellent varity of holes added to the challenge. Shot 39 on the front nine but wilted coming home to finish with a 90.
Great welcome in the pro shop and club house we were made to feel really welcome by members and staff.
You should all be proud of your great course
Thanks
John (Halifax)

Just returned from 3rd golfing holiday in Scotland. Played many courses, Downfield on each visit.
Downfield rates as one of my favourite courses played ever. Every hole brings something different.
A joy to play - back next year!
