It is difficult to really establish what kind of ciurse Golpsie is. It's a hybrid of links, heathland, moorland and parkland which provides one of the toughest tests of golf you could find in terms of the sheer variety of holes on offer.

The opening 5 holes are definitely links style golf, played along the shoreline. Drives can be sprayed pretty much anywhere, which doesn't prepare you for what is to come.

You then go inland and play a series of heathland/parkland holes where straight driving is an absolute must. Fairways are tight, stray from the straight and narrow and all kinds of hazards await - heather, gorse and water to name a few. Several tee shots are blind, just in case the course wasn't difficult enough. The best line for so many drives on this course see you going over heather and pretty heavy rough, so "duff" drives are heavily penalised.

The greens are generally in good nick, and are well protected by bunkers, water, gorse etc as well as the prevailing elements. The course in general looked in need of a little bit of care and attention when we visited, but that said this is a good testing track.

The Clubhouse, as with many of the Highlands clubs, did not look the most inviting but facilities inside were adequate. We were well looked after as visitors who they are clearly keen to attract.

A tough challenge but well worth the visit.

The penultimate day of the Scotland 2006 tour and destination Golspie to experience this links / heathland / parkland conundrum.

Holes 5 to 11 really make this course but there's also a superb collection of five par 3s which must be difficult to beat for sheer variety – everything from a beefy semi-blind 217-yard links hole at 17 to a short mid-iron at 10 over a pond in the wooded section.

However, the highlight of the course is the 9th, a superlative 412 yard par 4, which demands total accuracy off the tee to avoid the heather and then a top-drawer approach shot, all set against a stunning backdrop of firs. It's called 'Paradise,' and not without good reason. The short 7th and the long 8th before it are also very good par 4s in their own right.

The parkland holes (particularly 13, 14 & 15) didn't really do much for me although the finishing three holes are stronger and ensure the round doesn't peter out.

Overall, the mixture of settings means Golspie is surely a unique course. It's also welcoming, totally unpretentious and a good test of golf.

Tomorrow, though, is the final day and the big one: Royal Dornoch. Bring it on...

A brilliant golf course which although it is not too difficult length wise, never alows you to take it apart.

Perhaps my favorite Socttish golfing experience. Three courses in one (seaside links, parkland, and heather) Golpsie is relatively easy but challenging at every turn. It is a true local course and you get the sense of golf the way the Scots play it (as opposed to the way toursits play it). So charming, we played it twice!!
