The Muir of Ord Golf Club Player Reports
David Maclean (Scotland) 24/11/05
This is a cracking course, very deceptive from the main passing road. The opening few holes just get you warmed up before you cross the railway line and face a tremendous run of challenging holes.
The real gems in this course are the 7th, 12th and 13th, and if you head for the 19th still in good shape after the 14th, then you have every chance of a good score.
This is great value for money, very friendly and the quality and condition of this course in the spring/summer months WILL NOT BE BETTERED ANYWHERE! a real credit to the staff.

A wonderfully warm welcome and excellent value!. Using the 2-Fore! Today's Golfer scheme the cost for two of us was £18 for the day. The pro shop was well stocked with cheap balls and friendly, the 'pro' lent my playing partner his trolley for the day. The first few holes are relatively short but the fairways are tight with heather and gorse lurking. The 4th hole runs right by the railway line and out of bounds is an ever present danger! Once over the railway line the holes have a different feel, being longer with trees and hills adding interest. The views all round are interesting, with Ben Wyvis in the distance calling all 'munro-baggers'. A feature of the course are two excellent par-3's, along with number 11 forming Muir of Ord's own 'Amen Corner'. The real gems are nos. 12 and 13. At 211 yards long from an elevated tee, number 12 - the aptly named 'Thirsty', has two water hazzards; with jungle lurking immdeiately behind the green. Either 'lay-up' between the two streams or close your eyes, go for it and hold tight. The 13th 'Castle Hill' offers little respite despite being only 102(near vertcal!) yards, miss the grren to the left at your peril.
The closing holes are more straightforward though the tee shot from the 17th can easily threaten the traffic on the nearby road. My only grouch about the course was that the 18th green is placed BEHIND the first tee, and immediately left is the a'cursed railway line and out of bounds. A good course with a warm welcome (though no food on Thursdays) that should be on any golfers itinerary when they are near Inverness.

The course has been redesigned during '96 to include three new holes taking the par for the course up to 68, 33 strokes in, 35 strokes out. The new holes lengthen the course and call for good spikes as well as larger lung capacity- well worth it though.
