Played the course on a relatively quiet day in July. Great fun, will play it again. Definitely a couple blind holes with no idea where to hit the ball. Would do well with a local or on a second round. Wonderful views, good condition, friendly folks.

Very enjoyable.

I played 36 holes back-to-back in Sept 2003 on a bright, blustery morning and enjoyed it immensely. I'd agree that the old back nine are the ones that you remember (that's not to say the front nine aren't fun) and you also need to have played the course to see where to go (my second round was miles better then the first). The back nine in particular offer typical links golf (blind shots, hard bounces and true firm greens). The front nine are fun but less linksey and being higher up feel the wind a lot more. I'd definitely play again if I was in the area.

This is a links course of two different nines. The back nine is the old nine, dating from 1888. These are classic links holes with many fairway undulations and resulting blind shots. My favourite hole is the twelfth, probably the last hole in an earlier age as it is named Home. At 428 yards from the medal tee it is the longest par 4 on the back nine with its best feature being its sunken green, typical of Scottish links golf. The blind and well-bunkered 148 yard par three 16th with the Ythan estuary on the left is another good hole. The front nine is the new nine and dates from 1996, in 2001 the fairways and greens still had a new feel. These nine contrast to the back nine in that blind shots are rare, these holes having a higher elevation, are further inland and have a former farmland feel. The fairways in the main are wide and the dog-legged par 5 3rd and 9th being the best on the front nine. An interesting and unusual feature on the 4th fairway is the low u-shaped wall, which I presume is to represent a sheep pen as the hole is called Drovers. For most golfers the wall shouldn’t come into play, as the hole is a relatively short 285yards, but I’ll bet it is the bane of lady golfers and high handicappers. Did I enjoy the course? Yes I did. Will I play there again? Unlikely, the front nine isn’t yet mature enough, I had to play too many blind shots and local knowledge is required to score well. Anything else I liked? The fantastically futuristic clubhouse opened in 2001 by Paul Lawrie, former Open Championship winner, and the great Scottish welcome. It’s not the best links course I’ve played in Scotland nor is it the worst.

I played 36 holes at Newburgh on 7/8/99. Its a classic links course with fast, true greens and hard, running fairways. Unfortunately I played fairly pish, especially in the morning round, losing 6 balls. If you miss the fairways the rough is elarge. I enjoyed it, though, despite being taught a lesson in putting by Hornet Horne. Favourite hole was the eighteenth, where I finally hit a decent drive.
