Palacerigg Golf Club Player Reports

Although still early season, some tees were badly worn and the greens were very bumpy. Nice lay out and could be better later in season. Back nine very easy due to short par 4s.

Palacerigg enjoys a rich heritage from the golf course design in the early 1970's by 3 times Open champion Henry Cotton to the well organised and structured golf club which has attracted the Tartan Tour and County competitions in the past. The highlight of the year is the Charity Day which is always held on the last Sunday of July. Since the club's 25th anniversary in 2000 we have enjoyed the company of honorary member Stephen Hendry, Ken Buchanan and Stuart Kennedy. Members enjoy a medal competition every Saturday and Wednesday throughout the season and a warm welcome is always extended to visitors. The best time to play the golf course is June - September.

Palacerigg is a genuinely decent golf course that seems to rise above some of its obvious limitations. There are some some excellent long holes that exhibit a certain sense of nobility, namely the fifth, seventh, fifteenth and eighteenth. Indeed the fifth hole is one of the strongest of its kind that I have ever played. However the par threes are few in number (3) and rather bland in character. Furthermore there is a somewhat undistinguished stretch of 300-yard par 4s coming home which generally fail to inspire. As a council course the condition is not always what it should be and the greens can be somewhat bumpy and rather slow. In addition, the rough which lingers yards from the fairway can be incredibly unforgiving and the course does suffer from some serious drainage issues which can detract from the player's enjoyment. Built as it is on an undulating plateau, over 500 feet above sea level, it can also be somewhat stormy on occasion. Nevertheless, Palacerigg is a course that provides a strong examination of accurate, strategic play and at £6 for a weekday round perhaps provides some of the best value golf in the country.
Grant Thomson (Scotland) 05/05/04
Palacerigg is a better laid out course than many private courses i've played although it can be let down at times by drainage problems in certain parts of the course. However, if you get it in the middle of summer in top condition it is an excellent course.

I think it is a good course for starters and experinced players. They have an exelent practice green made by my dad Thomas McQuade
