Royal Troon Golf Club Player Reports
Clay Ballentine (USA) 11/10/06
Played Royal Troon for 2nd time this past September and course was in "Open" like condition. Despite high play this course always maintained to excellent standard.
Like many traditional old links layouts, Royal Troon starts you off fairly easy and straightforward. This last time, we had a reverse wind to the usual prevailing wind, so not so easy a start, but a lovely one.
This is a wonderful test and I would recommend every travel golfer who has the opportunity to play it every time they can. Lunch is always a joy as well. Royal Troon always has some of the very best caddies and if you buy a package, don't forget to try a few holes of the Portland course as it's a good challenge itself.

Played the Championship course 4/10/2001 in a fourball. Weather was overcast with a slight breeze, around 16 degrees. As expected, the course was in excellent condition. Even the four cored greens ran true! Highlights were 3 out of 4 in our group parring the Postage Stamp 8th. It rained thru holes 6 to 8, otherwise the conditions for golf were excellent. An unexpected welcome throughout our visit was had, including a very convivial chat with several of the members after our round. To hell with the expense - this is a DEFINITE must play course.

My brother and I played 12/07/99. It was 75 degrees and just a slight wind, what an expirence. The highlight was paring the Postage Stamp. The staff and caddies were very helpful, and had a great sense of humor. I did cause one faux-pas, I forgot to remove my hat in the dining room. This course was truly exceptional.

Played Royal Troon on 27/5/98. Despite some confusion between myself\r\nand the starter as to the date of my tee reservation, I was allowed\r\nto play on a day when visitors are not permitted to play. The \r\nSecretary was very hospitable and graciously allowed me to play.\r\nThe course was terrific and I can recommend this course to anyone \r\ntraveling in Ayrshire.
