If you love golf and love to play it on beautiful courses, look elsewhere. This course is abismal. The only challenging hole is a par 4 on the back 9, i forget which one and, to be honest, i don't care. The hole demands a mid iron off the tee to a MASSIVE approach. The par 5's are straight. The 18th is a good one, over 600 yards. Now for the evaluation: The greens resemble shag pile carpet, the fairways are peppered with divots, the tee boxes could do with a good graze (i presume there is nothing to cut the grass, the course provides adequate proof of this. As a result i can only deduce a sheep might be used). Save your money. This is the worst course in Edinburgh, no exceptions

Excellent course which is great value for money. The condition of the greens has improved and they are now very good. The outstanding feature of the courses is certainly the memorable views across land and sea, but there are some tough holes in there as well. The 7th and 9th are two pars fours which are a tough challenge to get on in 2, and as for the long dogleg par 4 16th, how any one can make it on there in 2 is beyond me! The 18th is a long slog into the breeze (which is usually strong!) and a potential card wrecker, but there are some easy holes, which little deep rough, to balance it out nicely!

A good layout with nice views and very forgiving for wayward drives. When we played the greens were very poor indeed - exceptionally slow in places with lots of sand and bare patches.

At the weekend a round is £17 which is just about ok but if the greens were sorted out this could be a very nice course.

Sadly that which once was (as the previous writter said) great value for money is no longer.

The local council for whatever reason seem hell bent on destroying what is a fantastically laid out golf course and one which could truly be a great golf course.

Out of 18 greens only 7 are playable and that's being kind. Note the date of writting 30th June 2003! We have had fantastic weather this summer and for the course to be in this condition at this stage is a joke.

I'm not talking a few bumps or drainage holes but swathes of missing grass, grasses at different lengths and pins placed in ludicrous positions in an attempt to find a green piece of green!

No care is given to this course any more and to be charged £14 to play is robbery.

It is truly a great shame. Save your money. Go play elsewhere.

Silverknowes for a public course offers good value for money (depending on the mood of the green keeper). The layout of the course is excellent, you will not get bored walking up and down flat, parallel holes here.

Okay, so there is little to be afraid of from the tee as it is very open and the bunkers are an absolute disgrace but the greens are well guarded and tricky to hit.

The 5th, 7th, 9th and 13th are very interesting and challenging holes; the 16th and 18th can be card wreckers. The 18th, 600yrds into the wind with the pin precariously balanced on a severely left to right sloping green is an experience in itself.

Of the three par 3's, only the 15th is an easy hit anything errant on the 2nd and 8th and you can more or less wave bye-bye to your three.

If you know your yardages and can keep the ball straight you'll score very well around this course but don't feel you can spray it from the tee and walk away with a good card. You can't and you won't.

This course is a long one! The first three holes lull you into a false sense of security. Well if like me, you prefer downhill holes to uphill holes! Like any course though, the more you play it the better you understand it and improve. However it has its' challenges. Being so close to the Forth Estuary you are often challenged by the sea breezes, which often prevent the ball from remaining neatly on top of a tee! The other challenge (if you are playing around Spring 2002) are the ditches being dug by contractors to improve the drainage. The course often floods during heavy rain. If you are like me, ditches mean that's where the ball lands. Murpheys Law. The last hole is a cracker. Only because it's so long, nearly 600 yards - the longest in Scotland - and straight as a die, but the fairway slopes from left down to right. Often a good left fairway shot just slithers off to the right. It's a demoralizing last hole if you are not a big hitter (big straight hitter), as you can often end your round on a rather large score....ce la vie.

Enjoy though, my pals and I do!
