Southerness Golf Club Player Reports

Day 3 (July 14, 2008) of our Scottish golf tour - "we" being six Swedish golfers - we played at Southerness, en route to Silloth for a brief foray into England.
After a fairly gentle start at Wigtownshire County and Stranraer, Southerness offered a much sterner test, especially as the wind was blowing some 20 mph. The course is not so spectacular from a scenic point of view, being located on pretty flat links land, but it is a very fair golf course where you can see the difficulties - at least most of them. The layout is interesting and varied. I think I'd probably name hole 12 as my personal favorite - a par 4 that is not very long but has more vertical contour than most of the other holes, and an interesting green area.
The greens were exceptionally good, fast and true. Fairways and tees were excellent too, while the rough was tough without being extreme. One particular characteristic of Southerness rough, compared to the other links courses we played, was the amount of heather bordering the mown areas. Heather is nice because you don't usually lose your ball in it, but at the same time it's hell trying to play out of it. You'll frequently be tempted by a seemingly nice and clean lie, but don't fall for the temptation! Be content with taking the shortest way back to the fairway; it will pay off in the long run.
We had not phoned ahead to book tee times, but it was Monday and the weather wasn't too good, so there were many tee times to choose from. The clubhouse is modern but cosy and it offers everything the visiting golfer may need.

I have now played Southerness 3 times and never gave this great course the credit it deserves after my first 2 visits. I thought it did not have that much character. However I played it for a third time in August 2007 in very windy and wet conditions and have totally changed my mind. Southerness is fantastic test of links golf. If you miss the fairway its curtains and you will drop many shots. The course is in excellent condition as always and is a joy to play. The 4th and 12th are my favourite holes. A very tough test of golf. You need to hit the ball very well to score on this course. Great value for money. Outwith the Open Champion courses, I only rate Dornoch & Silloth better than Southerness. An equal to Nairn but no better in the UK.

Played in May 2007 on a gloriously sunny day in pretty benign conditions (no wind to speak of, and the heather and gorse were not too intrusive). Excellent links course, very flat, so no blind shots. Fairways and greens in very good condition. Over 6,000 yards off the yellows, but a very mean par 69, with only two (both relatively short) par 5s. Views are stunning, with the Dumriesshire hills and coastline to one side and the Lake District to the other. Friendly clubhouse and service. £45 green fees. Well worth it (even if I say so after a birdie-par finish for a 21 handicapper!).

costly i thought at £35.00 a round...that was august 2004 midweek...tried to haggle for a discount as there was 20 of us but he told us to pay or go somewhere else....corse is full of gorse which you expect from a links course so keep an eye on your line and always play a provisional because theres not much chance of finding your ball in the gorse..always windy ..check he trees near the course there shaped by the wind.personally dumfries and county is a better track but if you prefer links golf then give this a try but not worth the asking price...

We played our Directors' Outing yesterday over Southerness. The course is in great condition, relatively easy for 11 holes then the wind came up and blew us all over the place for the last 7!
The 14th was almost impossible in a strong left to right crosswind, we lost 6 balls in our group of four. Despite a 7 there, I putted like God on a good day and shot a 72, my best here by a long way. The clubhouse service and food were excellent as ever.

Couldn't have played this course in better weather as fairways very dry and springy in July sunshine.
A strong challenge for me as a high handicapper but the same for players of a greater standard.
Particularly liked hole 12 and the back nine in general, which seems to favour a left to right shot.
Keep your eye on the ball as if not in play will
struggle to find.
PS Take your deet along if warm and sunny. It will keep the flies away!.
