Second visit to HCEG (March 2007) and superb as usual. Not at all stuffy as you may expect with the history and relative difficulty in getting a tee time- made very welcome once you're there. Outstanding challenging course but very fair and rewards the player willing to go for it. We played in the wind which made it tough and i succumbed (again) to the bunkers on the par 3 13th. the £20 luncheon i don't think can be beaten, equivalent to a top public school dining room i'd imagine but with wonderful food. relaxing in the bay window overlooking 18 with a G&T reflecting on your round- doesn't get much better. highly recommended.

PLayed this course in Aug and the WX for our trip was dead perfect the whole 10 days. We loved this course. IN a nutshell, Muirfield is an experinece. YOu play 18 as a fourball in the morning, lunch in coat and tie, then foursome in the afternoon. The course is super but there is something more about this place that really grabs you--it's like Mr Golf Fuss is on your shoulder all the time reminding you about how golf should be played and enjoyed and experienced. I've played a bunch all over the world and i must say this is at the top of my list for the experience. WE played all the rota + Kingsbarns + Prestwick and Muirfield still haunts me big time.

Played the course yesterday in sunny, breezy conditions, our 4 ball starting on the 10th as the 1st is reserved for 2 balls and members. Our group thought that overall the course was pretty uninteresting, with not enough variation of terrain or sights of the sea to remind you that you were playing a links course. We found it very challenging, with the bunkers especially penal. Not in the same aesthetic class as say Turnberry Ailsa or the new Kingsbarns.

The clubhouse was a real contrast of modern and old fashioned. We were unable to get a coffee before playing as we were not dressed in collar and tie (though we has brought formal wear for lunch). The air conditioned locker

room had superb toilet and showering facilities. The dining room was a throwback to a time long forgotten where public schoolboys would sit tightly packed along two sides of long tables eating their lunch (which, admittedly, was superb). It was very uncomfortable sitting like stuffed shirts waiting on the head boy to come in and chastise you for taking too long to eat your food!

Overall, it was a great day out and an experience not to be missed by any true golfing aficienado - to be enjoyed for the sense of occasion. Worth doing once to at least be able to compare the reputed no.1 course in Britain against others that might truly hold the title.

If I died and went to heaven, then Muirfield would be the ideal golf course having passed through the pearly gates.

I had the opportunity to play this course just 2 weeks ago, with some of the stands up for the Open and I can say that it is awesome. Although playing off the forward tees, some of the tees shots required were quite frightening (try watching the 10th on the television and just imagine) and as usual, the fairways and greens are immaculate.

This is the 4th or 5th time I have played here and I suspect that I will never find a better course to play in my like, but I will keep trying

Played Muirfield August 1999. It is a superb course with no trickery, just great straight-forward holes, one after the other. Great conditions. People were very friendly and helpful, contrary to the reports that some have made.

A "must play" if in Edinburgh area.

Quite simply the best.

If there is a God he must have created this.

Nothing beats it although Machrihanish comes a very close second.

Played Muirfield in late April. The course was in excellent condition and very tough as you would expect an Open course to be. However, you can enjoy golf, and in a much more congenial atmosphere, in Gullane. If you come for the luncheon and the experience, this is the place. The course is not visually interesting, but does pride itself on penalizing the wayward shot. Not for the recreational golfer.

Played during the first week of November. In a ferocious wind, the course was extremely difficult for a 15 handicapper such as myself. There was no margin for error - a ball off the fairway was lost!

The course conditioning was excellent, and the lunch alone was worth the trip. (Although getting dressed in jacket & tie between rounds was somewhat peculiar.) We were very well received by the starter and staff, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

All in all, well worth the money for a day ticket.

I played Muirfield in October 1994, and will be playing again in May of 1999. Muirfield is an awesome course, the best conditioned course in all of the United Kingdom, with no other course even close. The course is the fairest of all the Open Championship courses. The greens are extremely fast. Playing a round at Muirfield is one you will remember always. The entire experience including lunch in the clubhouse, is one day to treasure the rest of your life.

In August 1994 I traveled to Scotland with a friend and we played eleven courses in seven days. Muirfield was my favorate. Staying at Greywalls was a pleasure too. I am in the process of putting together an intineray for June 1999 and I want to include Muirfield, but for a double round this time. I'm glad to see the price is not double the single round price.

This information contained herein is helpful in knowing when we can play, arranging lunch, etc. Thanks.\r\n
