The West Lothian Golf Club Player Reports

I was really intrigued to read the ‘reviews’ of the WLGC and really surprised at the venom of a certain golfer – after spending 2 weeks traveling Scotland with the golf clubs (and the wife - who fortunately is also a golfer..) we checked into a B&B across the road from the course purely by accident. After some sightseeing in Edinburgh (obligatory) I managed to get a round in the evening before leaving to head back to the deserts of the Middle East. I was really pleasantly surprised at the condition and the interesting layout of the course (not even to mention the views which kept the camera busy) – yes there are some blind drives and even blind approach shots, but nothing too disconcerting and a pleasant change from the target golf we get so used to. I thought it would be much tougher walking but didn't have any trouble. Having never seen the course before I shot 10 over (off an 8 handicap) and enjoyed making birdie on my final hole in Scotland in front of the clubhouse. Only one comment – I have never seen such short flags sticks – was certainly one reason for over-clubbing on a few holes as they looked so far away!

I confess that I have recently joined West Lothian GC and as such I am probably biased but....what an excellent course. Playing in February the course was in excellent condition and the smaller Winter course -still 18 holes but a fair number of par 3's - means that you can go round in about 2.5 hours.

And even with the snow about to fall I had to stop every now and again just to take in the views.

I'm looking forward to the summer.

I Cannnot believe people are slating West Lothian colf course ,the course is one of the best in West lothian if not the best it is always in great condition and the veiws are stunning.

I have played royal burgess also the course is in immaculate condition but is only a glorified pitch and putt.

If mr buchan wants Flat courses with no wind he would be better moving to another country.

And also take lessons on how to hit the ball straight.

Quite how anyone can compare West Lothian with the Burgess (please note the spelling) is quite beyond me. I used to be a member of WLGC and yes, it is a tough course, but given it's location, would you not expect it to be. If you want to play courses like the Burgess all the time, then please do so, but stay away from courses that offer something different.

The views are spectacular, and it must be one of the few courses in this country where you get an early warning on the approaching rain. When you see those clouds gathering up at Grangemouth, you know it's time to get the waterproofs out the bag, or hit the 19th.

So, S. Buchan doesn't like courses where it's windy and you have to hit the ball straight. I suggest he takes up crazy golf or avoids playing golf in Scotland. No prizes for guessing who the goat on the hillside was in September 2001. WLGC is as good a test of golf you will get in the area. It is open when courses around are submerged in water and if you play to your h'cap around here you have done well. The views are second to none but more importantly it provides some superbly laid out holes on a parkland setting. The Valley (16th)is most memorable. As a member of over twenty-five years I may be biased but at least I can spell properly. Frankly I can only assume S. Buchan's golf game is as sophisticated as his grasp of basic grammar.

This course can only be discribed as being a area of land that would be better being put over the tatties or used for sheep and goats. The wind wistles through the course, which is built of a hillside at 40mph and unless you only hit the ball 150yds you loose it. A ridiculas course with some ridiculas holes. These comments are not said lightly, but as a temper to the comments above. Yes the veiws are good but when your braced in the wind and constantly looking for you ball after a perfectly straight shot, who cares. The game is golf not hill walking although the area would be better employed in the latter. This is a awful golf course. If you can possible find another then I would.
