Campo de Golf El Saler Player Reports
Paul Granelli (England) 13/11/07
One of the very best courses in spain, along with El Bosque and La Sella in Denia.
Pine groves on the front nine and sand dunes the back, this is a very testing course. The par 3 17th and the 18th 2 of the best.

Mr Smith below seems to have been very unlucky, as we found the course to be in superb condition when we played last week. The greens were true and no sign of wear and tear on the fairways. Only the yellow teeing areas were a bit cut up, although the championship tees were immaculate (no surprise there).
The course itself is hard work: a combination of links and parkland golf you have to think carefully before every shot. Greens and fairways slope away at the edges, meaning your target is much smaller than it appears at first, and bunkers, trees and bushes lurk behind humps and hollows. Stray off line and you get punished - this course was built to test the pros so don't expect to get away with it! Apart from a couple of downwind holes, the driver is best left in the bag, which makes for some very long second shots.
At 88 euros a round it's not cheap, but that's to be expected from a course rated in the top 100 in the world. Take plenty of balls, and enjoy the challenge!

Played El Saler 1/03 as part of a party of 8.
The actual course design is very good, with some very interesting holes..but it was in poor condition.
Many of the fairways had 'divot' marks across them, as if the grass had been treated and had yet to recover.
There were many unrepaired pitch marks & dead grass on the greens.
We also played Alcadesa and Alicante (where we stayed), and these were both in better condition. The former, in particular was a well designed course.
The views at El Saler are special, and the place is worth a visit, but not the 'great course' we all read about...well it wasn't when we were there!
The 'parador' hotel where we tried to get some food was average at best.

A very tricky course, indeed 'one of the great tests of Spanish golf'. Some very tight holes, easy to lose the odd ball. Greens, bunkers both in excellent condition. Well worth spending a few minutes on the practice green to try to get the pace of putts before playing.

I first played this course in 1989. It is superb. It is half links and half woodland. It is right on the coast near to Valencia. When the wind blows it is as tough as many of the Scottish courses. Super greens. The hotel adjacent is top class. Well worth a visit.
