Sherry Golf Jerez Player Reports
Tamas Ray (England) 30/10/07
Sherry is a relatively new course built on the outskirts of Jerez. You have to drive through a building site to get to the clubhouse, but once there you get the feeling of a well established club. The course itself was in fantastic condition when we first played in October 2005 and appears to have matured well when we returned in October 2007. At 7200 yards off the back tees, the course can be a bit of a monster, but length is not the main challenge here.
The front 9 is set into the side of a hill and you have to deal with significant changes in elevation and plenty of shots with the ball above or below your feet. The first hole, 400 yards straight uphill, will get your heart rate soaring if you're not in a buggy.
The back 9, however, is much flatter and different in character, with water coming into play on 7 of the holes. The stretch of holes from 13 to 16 is one of the most demanding you will ever see, with water absolutely everywhere, often on both sides of the fairway. The only relief you have is that the fairways are wide and the greens are large, but the punishment for missing them is severe.
The clubhouse and practice facilities are superb, and the course now hosts European Tour qualifying. All in all, a fantastic venue.
