Machynys Peninsula Golf and Country Club Player Reports
Jon Ponsford (England) 07/08/07
Day three of out tour of S W Wales brought us to the Nicklaus designed Machynys peninsula course, and it was still sunny and hot. First a word of advice to any mid-to-high handicap golfer (or society) who might see the excellent leaflet from this club and be put off from playing here on the grounds that it looks to difficult with all the water that surrounds the holes. Please don’t worry, we found it easiest of the five courses we played, the water only really comes into play on 2/3 holes and even as mid handicap golfers we all cleared the lakes quite easily playing off the yellow tees.
The course planner shows very narrow fairways, but in reality there is plenty of room. Because the course is on the beach, it is completely flat and to a certain extent rather boring, I believe it would benefit from some elevated tee boxes to give some definition and allow a view of the fairway one is playing. Accepting the course has only been open 27 months it is neither a links nor an estate course and relies heavily on the Nicklaus name.
Perhaps when the wind blows it might become tougher, go and try it and form your own opinion.

Brought a group of 24 to play here in Easter week, and stayed over at Stradey Park hotel. Everything was brilliant ,including hotel and weather.Course was outstanding and we played it twice. Have played many other top layouts this lost nothing in comparison. Conditions were calm, but course would be much more difficult in windier times.A mixture of forward and back tees were used and changed after our first round, which made some holes very different, stroke index 1 off the back tees for example. Get a stroke saver if you can! Greens were superb, as was the scenery on part of the back nine. Practice facilities are unbeatable, and staff in health spa and at the course were helpful and friendly.Ridiculously cheap stay and play rates, and a course that we will definitely be returning to in the near future.
