Day one of our tour of South West Wales, after 2 months of rain, the sun appears. First course Ashburnham, none of the four of us had played it before, so a course planner was obtained from the very helpful staff in the pro shop, and I would advise anyone else to do the same.

If you stray off the fairway, just take your punishment and get back on by the shortest route, don’t try to be clever with too much club. We lost the odd ball purely because we couldn’t see the fairway on some of the blind shots. The 14th is a tremendous hole, once you spot the marker post, which had to be pointed out to us by a helpful member. The greens were very quick, and any down hill putt was a nightmare.

This is a great course, with very friendly and helpful members, and an ideal introduction to links golf, I would imagine it is very tough in the wind. But well worth a visit.

Played here midweek March 07 (£25 using a Green Free voucher).

Really good classy course .I'd put it into my top 10.I wouldn't say that it's an out & out links (+ you don't really see the sea) but it has links characteristics & feel. The holes go out & come back & i liked the design & style of the holes.

At the far end of the course around the turn there is a lovely peaceful feel & you can't here a sound.

In the main it's easy walking.

The 4 holes below the clubhouse are weaker & less enjoyable but it doesn't detract that much from the overall good feel of the course.

The pro was welcoming & helpful & the members we encountered were friendly.

The standard £50 green fee is too high but for £25 with the voucher for a course of this quality it's a bargain.

This course should be included on any golf trip to the area.

I called the pro-shop and said I was visiting the area, they were very friendly and helpful and said they'd try and fix me up with a game with some members that same afternoon. When I arrived no-one was going out but the assistant in the pro-shop took me outside and explained the layout of the course, they couldn't have been more helpful. I played the first 10 holes by myself and then met up with two members - just as well as the 11th was the first blind tee-shot! A good course, some long par 4's and tricky par 3's, especially the 6th, three good finishing holes - 16th is a downhill par 3, 17th a long par 4 with lots of trouble anywhere right, 18th a par 4 with the approach played to a green 50 feet above the fairway, the best greens I've played on in a long time - the members (very friendly and made me welcome) said they were at their best in the summer. One small point - no course planners available which made it tough over those first 10 holes (or perhaps I should have warmed up properly!). A very friendly 19th, if you're ever in the area give them a call for a great afternoon out.

Played here this week and last. VERY wet this week, hence: two holes out of play; one further winter green and some damp holes with bunkers full of water. Winter also means some temporary tees and portable mats mandatory on fairways. Sound ropey? It isn't. This is a fabulous links course that impresses even in these conditions. Remaining greens, fairways, bunkers were in fine condition. Really nice setting - misty/sunny view of the Gower Peninsula on climb to 18th green was haunting. Seems like a friendly club too. Can't wait to come back, especially come springtime.
