Excellent excellent course which is great value for money. One of North Wales hidden gems.
I arrived at Hawarden not knowing anything about the course we were directed by a member who we had got chatting to in the local shop, we originally were going to try one of Padeswood courses or Mold but we were persuaded to try out Hawarden. Fortunately we were given a guided tour to find the course which is well hidden from the beaten track. Once there we were introduced by our new friend to the Secretary / professional who was extremely helpful, because we had not booked a tee time he accomadated our fourball behind the senior section tee times. The course itself was in very tidy condition a typical parkland course tree lined a fine mixture of holes with many picturesque holes and trickling streams and two ponds on the 9th and 10th which have Canadian geese present.
The golf itself at Hawarden is very testing especially with the wind you have hit a variety of shots and you use the majority of your clubs in the bag, however if you are confident you can drive the ball straight i don't see that any problems and would imagine on a calm and dry day that a good scorecard could be achieved but don't get over confident as the course does have water that can catch out any offline or misshit shots. The front nine is a tougher test than the back nine with plenty of tough tight driving holes.
I enjoyed my first game at this very accomadating course, the staff and the members were very friendly, the service was excellent and a good pint of John Smiths with a hearty all day breakfast was excellent value for money.
I would certainly recommend a visit we will be going on several more occassions throughout the golf calender year as this excellent value for money!!!!!!!!!!

A hidden gem, your opening shot is from an elevated tee into a steep fairway upwards i may add(by the way hit a long iron because a wood goes to far and puts you in trouble)then back down to the first green which for me was a 4 iron but if i had taken my own advice at the start it would of been a 7 iron.
That sets the par for the course up hill down hill plus an array of sloping lies, club selection is paramount as i found to my cost at the 9th hole believe me its an iron and a mid one at that.
I thought the back nine was a little easier, if you can drive it 240,250 yards and not to far off line then you have an excellent chance at making some birdies if not solid pars. But beware the par 3 18th bites but what a beautiful finishing hole.

I played Hawarden recently and thought it was an absolute gem. A very testing course with many features and excellent greens. I would advise anybody visiting the area to try it out.
